Online Learning is better than Traditional Learning

One of the most prominent facets of the contemporary world is the presence of diverse forms of technology. According to a growing body of research, technology has had an overall positive impact on the society in many ways despite concerns from some sections of the society that the phenomenon is detrimental in a number of ways. One technological innovation that continues to draw widespread attention since its invention decades ago is the Internet (Rashty, 1999). Although the Internet is mostly used for the attainment of different types of information easily these days, one area in which its use has emerged is the realm of education. Concisely, the Internet has facilitated the advent of the idea of online learning, which continues to thrive owing to the immense benefits that it offers. Indeed, online learning enables individuals to pursue different academic goals, from simple courses to increasingly complex ones conveniently (Al-Hassan, 2010). While online learning presents certain concerns, overall, it is better than traditional learning. Thus, this paper looks to present an argument in favor of online learning by highlighting areas in which offers the greatest benefit.

Discussion

The idea of online learning is reasonably new and, as such, continues to evolve. Both online learners and tutors are constantly familiarizing themselves on the best way through which this mode of education can be managed considering that programs constantly evolving. The primary difference online learning and traditional learning is evident in the mode of teaching (Kirtman, 2009). Online learners attend classes, work on projects, ask and engage in discussion of questions with their tutors, as well as appear for their examinations. However, all these activities are carried out through the Internet. On the other hand, traditional learning activities are typically carried out in brick-and-mortar rooms. Despite this difference, online learning presents several advantages compared to traditional learning, which explains why a growing number of individuals are opting for this mode of education (Nguyen, 2015).

Firstly, one of the greatest advantages of online learning is that online academic institutions offer immense flexibility in terms of time. Taking online courses allows an individual greater convenience compared to traditional learning, as learners may opt to register into their course at any time that they feel is in alignment with their schedule. Although there are deadlines that pertain to homework assignments and discussions, online learners have the freedom to read and review course materials whenever they feel like doing so (Al-Omari & Salameh, 2012). For individuals managing careers and family, this beneficial aspect of online learning continues to be cited as one of the most important reasons that draw them to this mode of education. Succinctly, online learning enables such individuals to work toward the accomplishment of their academic goals and at the same time manage their careers and family as efficiently as possible.

Further, another major advantage of online learning is evident through its availability. Since this mode of education emerged, such academic institutions have been constantly growing in terms of their number. As such, unlike in traditional learning, there has been no shortage of online academic institutions (Ni, 2013). The increasing availability of online schools has offered individuals interested in pursuing their academic goals online the chance to pick from a vast array of available online academic institutions. Moreover, these individuals are free to choose the online school that fits their needs and desires unlike in traditional learning where an individual may fail to be admitted to the school in which are interested (Nguyen, 2015). Indeed, numerous online programs that offer master’s degree, bachelors, certificates, as well as online associates in a wide range of courses are available. Thus, irrespective of the course that an individual may be interested in, numerous online schools are available to fulfill their needs. Additionally, online academic institutions can be accessed easily, as all learners can attend classes from any region in the globe as long as they possess a computer that they can use to connect to the internet (Wong & Ng, 2016). Apart from this, online learning is devoid of the interruptions that are occasionally reported in traditional learning, as learners are free to engage in learning activities whenever they feel like.

Another major advantage of online learning is that it provides students the opportunity to access course materials around-the-clock. Unlike the traditional mode of learning in which learners often rely on the notes that they receive from their tutors, online academic institutions usually make available written lectures to their learners during the course of the semester. Certainly, this represents a major advantage over traditional learning where class lectures are primarily handed out in terms of notes (Al-Omari & Salameh, 2012). Of even greater significance is the fact that the chance to access course materials around-the-clock allows online learners to return review course material whenever they feel like doing so. Evidently, this allows online students to refresh their memories continuously, hence enabling them to stay on course to achieving their academic targets.

Moreover, online learning offers the advantage of location flexibility. In a few words, online academic institutions are spread all over globe, which offers an immense advantage to those interested in this mode of education (Ni, 2013). Concisely, this enables online learners to attend classes from virtually any region in the globe without having to leave their homes. The outcome of being able to learn in online institutions from other states or countries is an improved diversity among learning owing to the fact the composition of classes may carry individuals of who hail from diverse backgrounds from different regions of the globe. Consequently, the diversity of students attending such classes may enable students to share their unique experiences, hence improving the learning outcomes of this mode of education.

Having to spend no time on commuting is a major time advantage of online academic institutions. Many people find this very appealing. Even better, no travel expenses are incurred when attending online classes. This helps in saving a lot of money that can be directed towards other uses (Radović-Marković, 2010). The extra time spent when commuting to class is spent on other activities like completing of assignment, raising one’s family, working or studying. On top of zero commuting, student self-direction is available. Online students have the advantage to choose when and where to finish their assignments and they even have the ability to determine their own speed. Students personally direct themselves on how to carry out their studies and assignments within the given timeframe.

As a final point, the last most noteworthy advantage of online learning is financially related. In a few words, online academic institutions offer their services at lowered costs (Radović-Marković, 2010). In comparison, online courses costs tend to be cheaper than the sums of money typically required for traditional learning. Without a doubt, the relatively cheaper expenses combined with no commuting expenses plus not having to move or get meal plans on campus, add to the financial benefits with which online academic institutions are associated. Indeed, the financial aspect of online learning has been cited as one of the most important factors that individuals usually take into consideration prior to making the decision to opt for it. Considering that the learning outcomes of this mode of education is overall on par with traditional learning, it is safe to surmise that this particular benefit further reinforces the belief that online learning is of the utmost imperative.

In Conclusion, the growing importance of education coupled with the development of sophisticated technologies have given online education growing prominence. The acceptance and popularity of online education have grown so rapidly that some researchers are already speculating that it could become the dominant mode of instruction in the future. In the midst of this transition, the debate about which mode of education between online and classroom instruction is superior. Despite the debate, growing evidence shows that online education is overtaking classroom education in terms of effectiveness and delivering satisfaction to students. As demonstrated in this paper, online learning presents numerous advantages that traditional learning is unable to offer. Consequently, a growing number of individuals continue to express an interest in this mode of education. Although traditional learning remains more popular than online learning, overall, online learning represents the better alternative.
