Crisis Management—Write A Press Release

(20 Points)

The year is 1988. You are the Public Relations Coordinator for the new Charlotte Coliseum. On Friday August 12th at 9:12 A.M. the new 40,000 pound center hung scoreboard comes crashing to the arena floor. The night before at the opening ceremonies the Reverend Billy Graham had stood beneath that huge structure to dedicate the new building. The Charlotte Coliseum is a new 52 million dollar facility built by the City of Charlotte for the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets will begin their inaugural season in the NBA in November.

Luckily, there was no one standing beneath the scoreboard and no other injuries were reported. The Men’s and Women’s Olympic team are scheduled to play exhibition games that night. Steve Camp, managing director of the Coliseum Authority, said “we are committed to hosting our Olympic team events tonight and providing the citizens of Charlotte and throughout the region with quality events for years to come.”

The company that manufactured the scoreboard was making some last minute adjustments when the scoreboard fell. The Coliseum had not taken possession of the scoreboard from the manufacturer when the incident happened.

The scoreboard fell on the new basketball court which is ruined. The city of Charlotte has mobilized all of their resources and the floor as well as the mangled scoreboard will be removed as quickly as possible. The basketball court from the old Charlotte Coliseum will be brought over to the new facility and the games will go on as planned.

The time now is 10:00 A.M. Your assignment is to write a press release that will be distributed to the media so they can report on the incident at 12 noon.

Your press release should be no more than one typed page. It must capture the essence of the incident. Accuracy is important!

The Charlotte Coliseum is a new 23,500 seat coliseum owned by the City of Charlotte. The Coliseum cost 52 million and will be the home of the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets will begin their inaugural NBA season in November.
