B: Health Nursing Diagnosis Statement

Diagnosis statement: The diagnosis of adult obesity is dependent on the causing factor; however, it primarily entails encouraging physical activity, healthy lifestyle, bariatric surgery, and drug therapy. My nursing diagnosis is deficient knowledge related to lack of information/ incomplete information presented as evidence by lack of interest or request for information about obesity and nutritional requirements in adults.

Adult obesity is major concern not only in the U.S., but also across the globe. It is a health concern that is mainly attributed to lifestyle of the person such as poor dieting and lack of exercises. It results in health inequality because majority of the adults suffering from obesity are from the minority groups such as people of color and the disabled. This is because these people do not have access to updated information about obesity. More so, their poor standards of living makes them unable to afford healthy diets. Across the nation, there are multiple resources available to the community for addressing the health issue. Among them, include the state, county, and national programs managed by the respective governments. There are also non-governmental organizations that have invested in informing the public about the causes and consequences of obesity (CDC, 2015). Some organizations that address obesity concerns include The Obesity Policy Action and National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, among others.

Many factors cause obesity; however, the main cause is lack of physical exercises and excessive consumption of food energy due to poor diet (Lau, et al., 2007). Other causes include:

· Genetics- this include interplay between environment and genetics

· Illness- some illness such as resulting in eating disorders such as binge eating,

· Gut bacteria- this affects the rate of metabolism

· Social determinants- obesity may be prevalent in specific societies and that is mainly as a result of economic inequality.

Fortunately, there are primary prevention resources within my community that can reduce and prevent obesity. Resources provided within the community are Community Call to Action Against Obesity and Palm Beach County Diabetes Coalition. The Community Call to Action Against Obesity mission is to engage people of all ages in promoting and practicing healthier lifestyles to reduce obesity. They address reducing obesity by coming together in multi- faceted approach in increasing physical activity, reducing in screen time, reducing sugary drinks and etc. The Palm Beach County Diabetes Coalition vision is that Palm Beach County is a national model for controlling and preventing the incidence of diabetes through education, awareness, quality services, management, advocacy (Florida Department of health, 2012). In addition to Women Infant and Children (WIC), YMCA, Let’s Walk and many more.

In the U.S., obesity is considered a disease and various measures have been put in place by the government to prevent. This is because obesity results in healthy complications, such as heart diseases, which can be prevented. Thus, the major evidence-based approach employed include educating people on the importance of engaging in physical exercises and dietary changes. According to Center of Disease Control (CDC), 64.2% were overweight, with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater and 26.6% were obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater. in 2017, 28.4% of the adults in Florida were reported to be obese. With physical activity 44.5% of adults achieved at least 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (or an equivalent combination). 23.6% of Florida’s adults reported that during the past month, they had not participated in any physical activity. The dietary behaviors showed that 33.3% of adults reported having consumed fruits at the recommended level of 2 or more times per day. 28.3% of adults reported having consumed vegetables at the recommended level of 3 or more times per day. Women had higher obesity rates compared with men. Obesity rates varied with racial/ ethnic groups, with the highest rate among African Americans (45.7%). Being obese and overweight significantly raises medical cost and causes a great burden on the US medical cost and is expected to double ever decade (CDC, 2012).

C. Community Health Nursing Social Media Campaign Strategy

Social Media Campaign Objective:

To ensure that all the public, with special attention being given to the minority groups, accesses information about strategies to prevent and to manage obesity.

Two Population-Focused Social Marketing Interventions

I. Healthcare approach- this is an obesity intervention strategy that will involve the stakeholders in the healthcare, who include the nurses, physicians, and other health workers. Their role will be to share education and news related to obesity to the community through the social media-Facebook, by providing dietary plans and setting a goal healthy weight, this would improve the health of the community because the healthcare personnel are trusted healthcare professionals who have a big influence on the citizens (Foltz, et al., 2012).

II. Community-based intervention- this program will pay close attention to adults. Thus, the intervention will entail the community intervention such as proving My Plate pamphlets, diet regimen, and educate various ways to become physically active. Door to Door visits informing residence of free access to outdoor gyms. This strategy will help the community by providing information and educating them on importance of healthy diet and physical activity being. This will be effective since community leaders are influential in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

Social Media Platform

The social media platform to be used is Facebook and Instagram

Justification and Benefits of Using Facebook

Facebook is the appropriate social media platform to be used since it is the largest social networking site that can be accessed using multiple online applications. A page can be created specifically educate and provide social support. On Instagram videos and pictures will be provided to demonstrate how to keep track of calorie intake, diet and exercise regimen. Thus, its popularity will benefit the campaign since it will reach a vast target by educating and preventing co morbidities such as heart disease.

Benefit to the Target Population

The target population (adults) will benefit from the information posted on Facebook account and respond appropriately. Through the social network, the target population will access the obesity-related information in real time and respond appropriately. This will help educate and provide information needed regarding prevention, reducing obesity as well as promoting physical activities through work out videos, and providing facts on the risk of being obese. This will promote preventative care by education through a popular site used on daily by adults.

D. Best Practices for Implementing Social Media Tools

For the successful implementation of the social media tools, it is important to have a plan which involves designing a campaign which is engaging the hearts as well as the minds of the mission-crucial communities. This can be achieved through the development of a message platform with the core theme of the organization's mission. Another approach is to tell a story to help in having an ongoing conversation with the networks of self-identified networks and relationships. Another significant aspect towards successful implementation is the direct answering of questions instead of sending a link or redirecting people to another page. It is important to make it easier to find a doctor, make an appointment, and learn more in relation to the treatment.

It is important to get in shape through engaging the mission crucial communities in the conversation. Risk taking is also another important approach for a successful implementation of the social media marketing of health. It is also important to gain the trust of the team because they offer compelling conversation-based strategies. It is important to have social media teams with each knowing the organizational culture, products, and the services being offered. Listening and learning are important so that it gives room for getting the opinion of the people.

E. Social Media Campaign Implementation Plan

Stakeholder roles and responsibilities

The main stakeholder of the social media campaign strategy will be the group admin, who will also serve as the team manager. The role will include ensuring that the strategy is effective and reaches the target audience (aduts). In so doing, the manager will ensure that he defines what is to be published on the social media web page. The manager will also liaise with other healthcare professionals to ensure the community concerns are addressed appropriately. That means the healthcare professionals are important stakeholders as well as the community that will be expected to be actively involved in discussion on obesity through the social media platform.

Potential Public and Private Partnerships

The issue of obesity is a global concern; therefore, it is expected that the government health agencies along with the private health players will integrate and make the social media campaign a success. A key feature of this framework is building capacity across the public and private sectors to mobilize a coordinated effort to change the environment that constrains healthy behaviors, such as healthy diet and physical activity, and enables unhealthy ones. According to CDC 2009, public health must collaborate not only with government organizations, community coalitions, academia, and mass media but also the corporations that control and shape our food system. Public and Private Partnerships would aid in the implementation of the social media campaign by expediting the adoption of new rules that apply to a wide range of competing companies. The right public-private partnership can stimulate cooperation rather than hostility from corporate partners (McDermott, R et al. 2009).

Evaluation of the effectiveness

The effectiveness of the campaign will be assessed through the social media responses that admin receives from people visiting the page. Additionally, the number of people visiting the network page will also be quantified.

Cost

The cost of the social media campaign will be approximately USD$ 50. This is because volunteers will carry out most of the work. The USD$ 50 will be the cost for hiring the conference room where the stakeholders will discuss key issues.

F. Reflection

The social media is an ideal tool for enhancing health concerns due to its ease of use and cost-effectiveness. The nurses can embrace it to promote health; however, privacy concerns should be addressed since loss of personal information can result in bad publicity and legal action against the group admin.
