Nursing Research

· Today’s healthcare system is complex, and patients have increasingly varied needs. Developing solutions for the health issues of diverse populations requires providers with many different perspectives. This is where nursing research is needed. The opportunities to enhance our practice are endless. Please take a moment to review your course syllabus and reflect on the concepts that are listed in the objectives.

· You have had the opportunity to select an issue of interest to you.

· You were able to synthesize similar scholarly publications through the literature review.

· You were able to focus and discover the AACN Essentials as they apply to graduate education.

· You were able to design types (qualitative/quantitative/mixed-methods), types of research, associated ethics, data collection, data analysis, implementation, and interpretation phase

· Finally, we explored the reporting phase: presenting research findings, preparing research proposals, publishing results, and using evidence-based practice

There was a significant amount of information covered. Perfection will take time. However, with practice, you will become proficient research scholars. I wanted to share a brief video clip as a refresher from what we have explored.

In the past, many may have thought that research was just a simple process of looking up information and writing about it. As you have come to know, research is a scientific skill and it is vital to the development of the nursing profession. Without research, our profession cannot grow. It is my sincere wish that the next time when you open a journal to read a research article, you will have a genuine appreciation for what steps the author went through to get their studies completed. Consideration should be given to the problem investigation, literature review, data collection, methodology, results, discussion, implications, and conclusion.

Remember class, nursing research is research that provides evidence used to support nursing practices. Nursing, as an evidence-based area of practice, has been developing since the time of Florence Nightingale to the present day, where many nurses now work as researchers based in universities as well as in the health care setting.
