Susan Sontag: Notes on Camp

In her opening Susan says that in the world many things have not been named and if they have been named, then they have not been described. In this case she uses an example of sensibility that she calls a camp (Irene, 2018). In her essay, Susan uses a lot of contradicting statements in an attempt to define and describe the Camp. For example, she says that she feels so strongly attracted to the camp but she is also offended by it.

Camp has been used to denote fashion with respect to dressing, hairstyle, cultural landmarks and even personalities. Items such as lamps, colors, shapes, deigns have strongly been used to describe the camp (Irene, 2018)

However, despite the description of the cult of camp by Susan, one interesting aspect in her essay is exaggeration. Her work uses relatively high level of exaggeration in her choice of words. For example she says the camp is a woman walking around in address made up of three million feathers.

The camp according to Susan is meant to “Dethrone the serious”. She says that camp is playful and anti-serious (Irene, 2018). The question one may derive from this statement is whether fashionably dressed women and people in sneakers purpose to neutralize seriousness.

Susan basically tries to describe the role of art and culture in societies by invoking metaphors and exaggerations in her work. Since camp simply points at everything from fashion, style, cultures and the arts associated then everyone in the world today belongs to the camp cult.
