Abstract
Change in the traditional education was first witnessed in the 1800s where distance learning was introduced to cater for students who could not avail themselves on university campus. Distance learning students were sent correspondence courses through the postal system. In 1919, the University of Wisconsin introduced the first radio station that was licensed to offer education programs. In 1930s, the University of LOWA introduced the first television station that offered education which was followed by online learning in the 1980s (Eom & Ashill, 2016). As at 2008, statistics revealed that online enrollment stood at 20% of the total students in universities and colleges globally (Eom & Ashill, 2016). Recently in 2020, many learning institutions have moved to adopt online learning due to the social distancing measures that were enforced globally due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak. It is expected that more institutes are going to adapt e- learning as part of their curriculum after normal activities resume in the world. Similarities between traditional learning and online learning have made the two approaches of education to be almost inseparable. Giving and receiving feedback is crucial in both traditional education and online learning. Both approaches offer students assignments and continuous assessment exams. However the differences in these two approaches are overwhelming. The tuition expense for traditional education differs from the cost of taking an online course. The study materials used in traditional learning differ from those that are applied in online learning platforms. Online learning is considered to be more convenient than traditional learning. Tuition fees charged for online courses are is considerably cheaper compared to fees charged to students undertaking their courses on campus. The difference can be associated to many aspects; one of them being the fact that in determining the cost of studying on campus, the school factors in all the administrative costs. In online learning, the cost associated with a program may be limited to only the direct administrative costs that are associated with it. This direct cost will include the salaries of professors, cost of maintaining the online platform among other direct cost but excluding expenses such as payment of subordinate staff, garbage collection or campus security. This makes it cheaper to study online than on campus. The long period of acquiring feedback can be attributed to the fact that both parties depend on gadgets for communication rather than facial communication. If students are in need of reaching their professors, they have to do so by sending them an email or any other method that is put in place by the learning institution. The same will apply to a professor when they want to communicate with their students; they have to go through the channels put in place by the school. In campus learning, students enjoy the privilege of acquiring feedback from their professors through face to face interactions. General human interaction is limited in online learning. Students on campus are known to make friends easily since they interact in classrooms and also out of the learning environment for example in their dormitories. Social interaction for students taking online classes is mostly limited to social media platforms with others not getting a chance to interact with each other at all. Social interaction among students and also with their teachers is considered to be crucial since they get to acquire communication skills and behavioral techniques that relate to their profession making it easy for them to adapt to their work setup later in life (Wang, 2017). Online learning mostly uses four tools in their study course; printable documents which are mostly presented in PDF format, image tools which include tutorials, films and video conferencing, audio tools which include radio and telephone communication and lastly electronic data which is communicated through emails, telegram among other forms of data transfer. For students on Campus, they get to learn through almost all modes that are available for online students and also through attending lessons in classrooms. Campus students have access to both the physical library of the school and the e- library of the school. For online students, they have to rely on the e- library of the institution or any other library that is in their jurisdiction, provided they have access to reliable information. Online courses are considered to be highly flexible and convenient for time management. Students can take most of the classes at their own convenient time provided that they meet the deadlines of submitting assignments and taking exams. The location of studying is not limited to a specific environment. Students can take classes from the comfort of their house of even at their place of work provided that the environment is conducive for studying. Lessons offered in traditional education are class room oriented; both the student and the teacher have to avail themselves in person. Class attendance limits the schedules of many students making them to miss classes. A good number of students end up dropping out of school due to their tight schedule outside school. With the current economy, most students in higher education Institutions have to balance between studying and working so as to meet their daily needs (Gowda & Suma, 2017). For students taking online classes, it is advised that they practice high level of self discipline. Scheduling a study pattern and sticking to it is very important for online students, failure to which they may end up dropping their courses. A significant advantage that is associated with traditional education is the fact that it leaves limited room for procrastination. Conclusion
Although traditional education and online learning portray significant differences, they have common features that are almost inseparable. The decision to choose a mode of study will depend on the circumstances of a student since both approaches have similar objectives of providing students with the best knowledge. Online studying is more concerned with providing an environment that incorporates the daily demands of life. Traditional education on the other hand ensures that students are provided with education under the best environment that will enable them to learn with minimal disruptions.
