Technology plays an important role when it comes to securing our nation’s ports and waterways. Tracking and monitoring systems on vessels plays an intricate part on being effective should an emergent situation occur. A few tracking systems include the ship security reporting system, Automatic Identification System (AIS), Long Range Tacking and Identification (LRIT) System, and the Automated Manifest System (AMS). All these are tools to help maintain visual and acquire information regarding a vessel and its cargo. The ship’s reporting system is an alerting system to help send distress signals from the ship directly to the maritime security center. If there is an emergency aboard the vessel, this system can alert officials to send immediate helps. The AIS is a ship navigation and tracking system to help pinpoint the exact location, in real time, along with other navigational statistics. AIS is extremely accurate and reliable and can monitor up to 20 to 30 nautical miles. Very beneficial as vessels approach their destination and can be monitored closely for safety and security purposes. AIS overcomes problems with tracking targets, such as dense traffic, target swap, heavy rain and sea clutter. It can even detect in narrow channels and immediately if there is a change in heading. If a vessel needs to be found or is transiting towards a location it is not supposed it, it will be found. LRIT is a way to track a vessel’s progress globally. The information transmitted is the ship’s identity, its position along with the date and time of the position. It has range of up to 1000 nautical miles. The AMS details the cargo carried by the vessel.

With these tracking systems, high risk cargo can be closely monitored to ensure nothing is out of place during their transit. Officials will know what exactly is on board and the time of arrival as to be ready. If anything does become out of place, necessary responses can be in place well before the vessel enters the port. Having this critical information can ensure the safety of the port facilities and help prevent collisions or delays. If a port knows what exactly is aboard the vessel, they can prepare the appropriate tools and equipment to offload the cargo. Vessel monitoring is for the safety of everyone at the port and aboard the ship to have a clean and successful transit.
