What are the most critical possibilities and dangers posed by this idea/technology? Chapter 5 in Maynards book discusses a movie called Limitless. Here we learn about
this new idea/technology where some guy takes an experimental drug that allows him to use 100% of his mind. This is a pretty cool drug in the aspect that we are very forgetful and it would be very useful to be able to use your brain to its full potential and remember everything. But sadly this type of idea/technology can and will cause danger. In the movie the way you open up your brain to its full potential you must take pills. This can become an addiction and an unhealthy one leading you to feeling withdrawals when you don’t have them at your disposal. Or it can lead you to other health problems down the road. What essential social/humanistic principles (from the handouts) are implicated or at stake with this technology and why?
The Catholic Social Teaching “Life and Dignity of the Human Person” is at stake with this type of technology. This teaching is basically about how every life is sacred because god believes we should cherish every moment and person. But taking these drugs threaten and go against god's social teaching. Who would be the winners and potential losers, so to speak, and why?
The potential winners of this type of technology are the ones who benefit from it. Those who need a better memory to be more successful in life like in jobs for instance. The losers are those who suffer from the risk that comes from taking the drug. Chapter 1 What are the most critical possibilities and dangers posed by this idea/technology?
The idea of human cloning sounds fascinating for the reason that you are recreatig a new person to your own liking or someone we can’t bare to lose. Cloning humans it's quite difficult and has ethical problems. In the movie “Never Let Me Go” , Ishiguro characters and the circumstances of their lives reveal a dark side how technology can lead to devastating discrimiantion and abuse if not used ethically and responsibly. It succeeded in providing a deep dive into a questionable morality of convenient technology that challenges you on how we treat people, and what separates humanity from inhumanity. Now only does it challenge us to define our humanity but our worth as human-sapiens. What essential social/humanistic principles (from the handouts) are implicated or at stake with this technology and why?
The essential social/humanistic principles that are at stake with human clothing is the catholic social teaching of the life and dignity of the human person. In handout it states all human life is sacred and its threatened by cloning. Those who are catholic feel uneasy by being conceived through science. They believe that it's not in God’s plan to be here if they are not conceived by their parents, to them being human does not come with God’s given rights to dominate, control other species for our own advantage . Who would be the winners and potential losers, so to speak, and why?
The potential winners will be those who benefit from human cloning, the scientist, and the investors. For example, those will be the people that can not have children or those who resurrect a child or a loved one. The losers are also us because if we are not careful technology has the power to rob us of our souls because it makes us forget the worth of others. It leads us into justifying technologies that devastate a small number of lives. “Maynard”
