Therapy Modality Incorporation in Practice
The use of psychotherapy is one of the most essential components in psychiatric nursing that helps in addressing the problems presented by patients. Psychotherapy is essentially a process that is used and helps in the treatment of psychological disorders and mental distress. This usually involves the use of different psychological and verbal techniques. Most of the psychotherapeutic approaches involve the establishment of a therapeutic relationship, effective communication, and collaboration between the provider and the client to overcome the problematic behaviors or thoughts. As such, PMHNPs are usually required to serve as psychotherapists to help their clients in overcoming and addressing their problematic behaviors and thoughts.
In my career and practice, I intend to adopt and use the person-centered style of therapy. This style of therapy involves the use of an emphatic and non-directive approach to motivate and empower patients in the therapeutic process. This style of therapy is anchored on the concept that every individual has the ability, desire, and capability for personal change and growth. As such, the use of person-centered therapy would help me in motivating and empowering clients through the use of an emphatic and non-directive approach that would help them to overcome and address their problematic behaviors and thoughts thereby improving their mental health status.
The use of patient-centered therapy would help in creating the necessary conditions that are required to facilitate and promote positive change in patients. This would involve the creation of a therapeutic environment, which is empathetic, non-judgmental, and conformable. Some of the techniques that would help me in creating a therapeutic environment include; genuineness, empathetic understanding of the patients’ feelings and experiences, and positive regard. For instance, the use of this style of therapy would help me in offering the needed guidance, structures, and support to patients that would enable them to come up with personalized solutions to their problems. The use of patient-centered therapy will also help in fostering self-awareness and self-acceptance among patients and assist them in changing their behaviors, leading to positive growth.
