Provider Self-care

Burnout affects attention and increases a health provider's propensity to medical errors, lowering the quality of their health services. As a provider, I understand the need to always be at peak performance. As such, I have set goals and boundaries alongside self-care mechanisms to help reduce my risk of job burnout. Firstly, I have established a self-care routine that allows me to execute my schedule efficiently. The plan includes pursuing my hobbies, such as reading and playing the piano during my free time, alongside maintaining a tranquil mental health state through yoga and meditation, which allows me to remain mindful in practice. Mainly, engaging in these activities relaxes my mind and body, with mindfulness enabling me to catch negative thoughts midstream and prevent them from ruining my efficacy and peace of mind. I also feel that engaging in a hobby such as playing the piano results in feelings of progress and accomplishment when it concerns personal goals.

I also listen to my body for signs of fatigue and burnout. I have set limits of how far I can go when it comes to providing care and working with others as, unlike machines, humans are likely to grow tired, making them feel exhausted. Setting such boundaries has also helped me take care of my body through nutrition and exercise. I focus on eating healthy every day and jog in my neighborhood at least three times a week. I also maintain close contact with my family and friends, visiting them whenever possible. Mainly, having a robust and active social support system helps me avoid extreme cases of stress as it enables me to share my workplace challenges and get multiple perfectives to addressing the issues. Despite the challenges faced in healthcare provision, sharing professional difficulties with colleagues and friends makes it easy to address the issue. It also boosts my morale for performing organizational duties. Knowing what I desire for my career and setting measurable goals in the personal and professional domains, and taking care of my mind and social relations help me avoid job burnout.
