How A.I. Affects Cybersecurity and The Government

Abdullah, Josh, Julia, Tyler, & Chris

What is Cyber Security?

What is Cyber Security?

Cyber security

Is the information technology security, the protection of computer systems

Hardware

Software

Electronic data

Cyber security is the ability to protect or defend cyberspace from an attack

What is A.I. (Artificial intelligence)?

Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence, or machine intelligence:

Intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by human and animals.

AI + cyber security:

AI IT equipped infrastructure prevent threats and attacks to cyber security

AI will help automate detecting attacks and reacting to breaches

AI will help automate response to limit damages

AI will also help personnel to sleep at night!

IT outsourcing + AI:

Tougher

Flexible

Capable to defend emerging cyber attacks methods.

Vulnerabilities

Pioneers of the AI system have opened these codes to the public and communities to help improve their framework

Cyber security criminals can use these codes and AI to figure out measures of the cyber security and perform attacks to organizations and government vulnerabilities.

What is ML: “Machine Learning”?

Machine Learning

ML is a subset of AI:

The study of Algorithms and statistical models that a computer system use to effectively perform tasks without using instructions from human.

Using data to answer questions

For Example:

Pictures: Tagging people/ face recognition

Youtube: recommended videos

Google: Search engine

SWOT Analysis

Strengths

Threat detection speed increases

Eliminating a threat will become more efficient

AI will understand a threat more from exposure to outside information(Blogs/News).

Security can be compromised without power.

Possibility of getting hacked

Weaknesses

Can detect an attack before it gets to the network.

Less human intervention(increased productivity)

Errors will be greatly eliminated.

Machines learn from past mistakes so they can’t happen again

Algorithms and data can be manipulated.

Adversary could force AI to expose its own weakness

Opportunities

Threats

In relation to MGMT

AI and Cyber security are crucial to MGMT side,

AI functions as managers for organizations and governments to lead.

Also, manage and secure data with zero human effort

In relation to ORG

AI and cybersecurity also are crucial to ORG side,

AI and cyber security relates to the system process

Also, sequence in governments and the system process security

History of AI

1950 Alan Turing published “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” which opened the doors to the AI field without giving it its official name

Named by John McCarthy in 1956 when he held the first conference regarding the subject

1988 Chat-Bots were invented - the beginning of AI through human interaction

1997 Biometrics began their debut into real life and not just on TV

2009 marked the beginning of self-driving car research/production

The development of AI in security

Biometrics (scanning facial features and hand prints) commonly used for security measures

1997 first facial recognition machine invented in Germany

India is currently pushing their project “Aadhaar” which is a process of gathering fingerprint, retina, and palm IDs for everyone in the country to have everyone cataloged

Apple and Samsung use fingerprint ID for phones and other devices but are not the first to include biometric scanners in consumer devices

Sony, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Toshiba, Acer, and others have all included fingerprint scanners in laptops at one time

Xbox One, from Microsoft, includes biometric data to identify users by voice as well as facial ID in order to sign you in to the console

Effects of AI, in workplace

Some jobs will be changed more than others

MIT predicts jobs won’t be wiped out, but rather reorganized to let machines to what they do better than humans

Ex. machines can do simple algorithms very well, but decision-making would be left to humans

AI devices can serve as personal assistants in the workplace

Customer support could be primarily be taken over by bots

Training could be done by machines after analyzing customer service calls and complaints and learning how to react to and fix certain problems

X.ai = system that acts as assistant to analyze schedules and work days to coordinate with other employees and easily fit everyone into each others schedules

Positives

Tedious tasks previously done by humans can be taken care of by machines (ex. Setting up meetings, sorting through emails, sending thank you’s, etc.)

Human error is eliminated

Efficiency increases

Production increases

Cost decreases since hiring humans is more expensive

Ease of use

Risks

There are many risks associated with the implementation of A.I. in our software.

CS: Anything involving Cybersecurity is already a risk, cs is a defence structure, therefore if it breaks, gets convoluted with errors, glitches, (in terms of machine learning)makes a calculated yet harmful decision etc… it will be a negative application of the tech, a risk.

GOV: Same logic applies to the government, it holds the utmost important data, A.I. as a tool can be harmful in the same ways

-Overall, A.I. is a new technology and it takes the human out of the decision making process of software, the implications for this technology are as large as the risks that follow.

Roles

What are the larger impacts caused by A.I.’s implementation in Cybersecurity and the Government?

CS: The main positive driving factor is the potential creation of new technologies, and of course efficiency and speed

GOV: The government has greatly invested and is using this technology in many ways:

-Efficiency & Speed increases in the many technologically advanced oriented agencies,: FDA, CIA, FBI, CENSUSBUREAU,NSA

“HR”

Human Resources, specifically as a department in the government will be impacted by A.I.

HR departments general activities are to work with people at many stages:

-Training

-Hiring

-Firing

In order to do this job they rely on data and technology, an area most affected by A.I.

-”Data takes a central position in this discussion”

-Truly, This discussion always goes back to efficiency and speed

Ethics

Most of the intellectual debate beyond the risks of A.I. are the ones about ethics:

-Machine learning, decision making

-Who decides what algorithm or code defines the A.I.’s logic

-Will jobs be impacted in the long run?

-Is chasing efficiency and speed worth the risks or even the bad events to come?

CSR

Corporate Social Responsibility: The perspective and vantage of this is from the government.

Although this is a very contextual slide, A.I.’s implementation has far reaching outputs, the environment, social society, workplace and marketplace will all be affected.

-The most prominent way A.I. affects the government in the terms of CSR is on ethics as described before, there are many questions about the correct philosophical approach in handling decision making, deep embedded technology such as A.I.

-Some questions worth asking:

A.I.’s impact on facial recognition technology? Increased and now almost precise surveillance? How far is too far, does this advanced technology limit or strengthen the government's powers?

Graduation +5

Global software system market size for artificial intelligence is expected to reach $78 Billion (from $2.65 billion in 2017)

Artificial intelligence becomes more efficient with faster reactions

Cyber-attacks get more complex as security improves

Software will not need training in order to work properly (AutoML)

Graduation +10

Artificial intelligence will be enhanced with the implementation of 5G.

AI will be widely implemented in different aspects of society

Distrust of data may increase as malicious software gets stronger to bypass AI Systems.

Overview/Summary

Artificial Intelligence is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals.

AI is one of the most revolutionary technological advancements we are experiencing today. It can take much effort and the need to be perfect out of human tasks, but can also be used against us in many different ways.

Artificial intelligence is crucial to both Management and Organization.

It can also benefit Human Resources, Cyber Security, and Government Agencies.

A lot is still unknown about the ethical effects AI will have on the implementation of production and sales.
