3.4 Cultural Map
1. List all the various cultures that you belong to (or that you would say have influenced the way you communicate). There are no right or wrong answers. You can identify all cultures (as we have defined that term) that make sense to you.
EX: Arab Community (Muslims/ Christian)
Family (Muslims)
Mother(The Walrus, 2015)(10 minutes with, 2015)
Academic
Soccer
American
2. Graphically “map” all the cultures in terms of their importance in your life now and their relation to each other. You can use any format you wish to map things. You may use different geometric shapes for various culture, different sizes, etc. Again, there are no right or wrong answers. Whatever mapping captures your sense of your cultures is fine.
EX:
Family
Academic
American
M
O
T
H
E
R
Arab Community
Soccer
3. Draw points of tension between your cultures. Which cultures tend to have norms for behavior that differ? That conflict? Which cultures are most in tension in this way? Draw arrows or other indicators to show that.
EX:
Family
Academic
American
M
O
T
H
E
R
Arab Community
Soccer
· Blue arrows: they affect each other but without conflict complementing each other
· Red arrows: they affect each other and differ/ conflict
· Soccer: It was the first stop in my life to learn about different cultures. To get to know other countries and peoples Thanks to her I have enough information to make you feel like I really lived in those countries. It is the passion that made me at this level of geographical and historical culture.
4. Which of these cultural tensions are most likely to cause you internal conflict?
Which of these cultural tensions are most likely to cause conflict with others?
By virtue of being new here it is certainly American culture. In addition, it will conflict with the family and Arab society to which I belong. But at the same time, I am happy to learn and take all the positive points from American society, this will broaden my perceptions
