Académie de la Grande Chaumière
An art school located in the Montparnasse district of Paris, France.
This art academy was found in 1870 by Martha Stettler and later bought by the Charpentier family.
It is said the biggest period for this academy was between the years of 1910 and 1940.
A few artist the attended this academy are Modigliani and Miro, Antoine Bourdelle and Ossip Zadkine (sculptors) and Laura Wheeler Waring.
During this period rent became expensive but many artist didn’t let that stop them. Instead the formed groups within the streets surrounding the academy to teach and discuss their thoughts.
Laura Wheeler Waring
Laura Wheeler Waring
African American artist and educator. She was born May 16, 1887 in Harford Conneticut.
Studied for six years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then recived a scholarship to study in Europe (Riggs, 1997).
Attended Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
In 1928 her artwork was displayed in the first African American art exhibit by the Harmon Foundation (Riggs, 1997).
Anna Washington Derry
Created in 1927 and gifted to the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
