Value is the tone created by mixing black and white into shades of gray. The value or tone of an element can create mass, depth, emphasis or volume and implication of light and shadow.

Achromatic is a term that refers to the mixture of black and white only. (It means without chroma – without color.)

Light traveling over a surface can express visual texture – or make a 2d image look like it contains texture.
