Metacognitive skills also need to be taught at both levels.
Basic MC Skills:
being accurate
being clear
being open-minded
being sensitive to the feelings and level of knowledge of others
engaging in tasks even when the answers are not apparent
being aware of one’s own thinking, planning
being aware of resources
Higher Level MC Skills:
taking a position when warranted
pushing the limits of one’s knowledge
generating and maintaining one’s own standards of evaluation, generating new ways of viewing a situation
evaluating the effectiveness of one’s own actions
being able to describe the process or reasons behind one’s thinking or actions
