Module 4 - Case

Career Planning and Diversity

Case Assignment

It may be surprising to find a chapter on career development in a book written for first-term college students. Certainly, beginning college and beginning a career are events taking place at different points in time and are different life transitions. However, the process of exploring career options and developing career-entry skills should begin in the first year of college.

Chapter 14 of Thriving at Trident covers how early career planning gives beginning college students a practical, motivational goal to strive for and gets them thinking about how the skills they are developing in college are relevant to their success beyond college. Thus, career planning is a form of life planning, and the sooner that college students start the process, the sooner they start gaining control of their future and start steering it in the direction they want it to go.

Please note that there are two parts to this assignment. You will submit both in a single MS-Word file. Complete, save, and upload to the Dropbox.

Part I: Interest Assessment

Complete the Interest Assessment at CareerOneStop.org.

  1. Go to CareerOneStop.org.
  2. Click the Explore Careers icon (located in the top blue header bar).
  3. Select the Self Assessments on the left side of the menu bar and read.
  4. Click on What is an assessment? and read.
  5. Click Interest Assessment in the drop-down menu.
  6. Get started with CareerOneStop's Interest Assessment. You'll answer 30 quick questions online. Then you'll get a list of careers that might be a good fit for your interests.
  7. Click on two jobs that you think are a good match and read the Occupational Profile associated with each job.

Part II: After completing the assessment, respond to the following:

  1. CareerOneStop Interest Assessment – Is it a match or not? After taking the assessment and reviewing your career matches, in 4-5 sentences, provide the two careers that were a BEST match and a brief description of each.
  2. Reflect on if you have worked in or are working in a similar job. If you have not, that is okay. Use the job description to help you. In 4-5 sentences, what do you think are or will be your strengths and weaknesses in working in each position? Lastly, explain whether you agree or disagree with the interest assessment findings.
  3. Explain in 4-5 sentences how your degree from Trident University will help you be successful in your chosen career. Consider the skills you have learned in this course and what you will acquire in your future courses that you feel you can and will be able to apply to your career.

Assignment Expectations

Answers should be written in complete sentences and paragraph form. There should be 4-5 sentences provided for each question. Be sure to proofread, as scholarly writing is important. When you have finished, title the file with your name (Example: Module 4 Case Helen Smith). Save and upload the document to the Case 4 Dropbox.

Review the grading rubric to ensure all requirements are met.

Resources for Student Success

Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office is required for assignments at Trident University. A free download of Office 365 is available to you as a student. Follow the instructions on the  Student Support Resources guide.

Tutor.com

You will see a Free Tutoring link in the navigation bar of your course. (If you do not see it, it may be under the "More" menu.)

Turnitin (TII) and the Practice Dropbox

Turnitin is linked directly to the assignment's Dropbox in this course. Once you submit an assignment to the Dropbox, Turnitin automatically generates a value called the Similarity Score, indicating how much matching text (text matching sources or other written papers) is present in your essay. You can click on the colored square to see the Similarity Report, which shows the sources that correspond to text within the paper.

Courses contain a Practice Dropbox that is also linked to TII. Before submitting the assignment to the module Case or SLP dropbox, the Practice Dropbox may be used to view the assignment's similarity score.

For more information on Turnitin, access the Turnitin Guide under the My Resources tab on the Trident Portal page or by clicking on the following link  https://mytlc.trident.edu/files/Turnitin-Guide.pdf
