Dear Legislators,

One issue that we have found when researching in association with Veterans and PTSD, is the accessibility of care. The criteria for eligibility is also an issue, according to APHA (2014), veterans must have served at least a 24 continuous months, or the full time in which they were call to active duty, this restricts veterans who have been discharged due to hardship, discharged early, from a disability. The eligibility priority is based on different levels and is limited to budget. the DOD and VA offer programs for PTSD but treatment is not reaching everyone who needs it. Barriers to the current policy include those such as location, distance from their home, and ability to get patients to their appointments (Marksberry, 2012).There needs to be better cost effective ways to implement policies that can help all veterans who experience a mental illness. Nurses in advanced practice roles would like to bring forth their stories of dealing with these veterans suffering with PTSD. The APRN’s would like to aide in the fight to get these veterans the treatment in a cost effective manner such as telemedicine and telemental health. We would want to encourage APRN’s to pursue a specialty in psychiatry through incentives.
