MLA Format.

1. To format a word document in MLA, follow these steps:

a. Last name and page number should be inserted at the top right of each page. To do this:

· click “insert” at the top of the page

· click “page number”at the top of the page

· click the first option titled “top of page”

· click the third option titled “Plain Number 3”

· type in your last name in front of the page number

· put a space between your name and the page number

· click “close header and footer” at the top of the page.

b. All text should be in Times New Roman, 12 point font

c. The margins should be set at 1 inch all around

d. Everything should be double spaced. Reminders: there should only be a double space between the title and the first line of the essay and there should only be a double space between each paragraph

e. Heading information should be typed at the top left of the first page – For an example of this, please consult the sample essay below.

f. There should be a title at the top and center of your document. I will never require a specific title for an essay. The title you create should relate to the general topic of the essay.

g. Each paragraph should be tabbed in once

The Achievement of Success through Persistence

It is true that being born into a privileged family gives a child an advantage when it comes to education and home environment, but a child does not need to be born into a rich or even a middle class family to become successful. A great example of this is the podcast, “Three Miles” by Chana Joffe- Walt. The podcast focuses on the lives of very poor high school children who were given the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the life of the rich through a pen-pal program with another school. They were given this opportunity so that they may be exposed to life on the other side of the fence and ultimately become motivated to move across social class barriers. Although this was the purpose of the program, as to whether or not this type of program does more harm to these children than good is unknown. Raquel and Melanie both partook in this program, but it had a different impact on both of their lives. Though Raquel and Melanie had similar backgrounds in that they grew up poor and were good students, Raquel ended up rising above her circumstances post high school and Melanie did not.
