Week 3 Discussion 2

For this week's story I chose state news that focuses on an important issue involving the judicial system. The Reno City Council’s has recently proposed a consideration to enforce a slew of new anti-vagrancy laws in efforts to make downtown Reno a cleaner and more inviting place. I feel this story is somewhat significant on a local and national level because people should know what the laws are in any city or state to prevent themselves from potentially violating them. To enforce the anti-vagrancy ordinances, however, the city must be able to provide alternative housing for homeless people and a sufficient amount of space in the shelter. “Reno Councilwoman Neoma Jardon said she supports the proposed ordinances, seeing they are a necessary tool to revitalize downtown” (RGJ, 2017, para. 11).

Within the story, the reporter does in fact provide a very detailed explanation of the proposed law, why this law is being taken into consideration, what it means for the city of Reno and how it could impact the community. According to the article, “Under consideration: No spitting on sidewalks. No climbing on structures not intended for climbing. No sitting or lying on the train trench lids. No sleeping on sidewalks or other public property. No panhandling from the medians. No crossing the street while looking at a mobile device” (RGJ, 2017, para. 2). This article provides an efficient amount of information to its relevancy and is significant enough to report on a national or local level.
