Apple follows its vision statement and mission statement to maintain its competitive strategy. The vision statement shows the direction of the company’s growth and product development. In relation, Apple’s mission statement indicates the actions needed to ensure that the company continues in its success path.

Apple’s Vision Statement

Apple’s current vision statement was introduced by CEO Tim Cook, who stated, “We believe that we are on the face of the earth to make great products and that’s not changing. We are constantly focusing on innovating. We believe in the simple not the complex. We believe that we need to own and control the primary technologies behind the products that we make, and participate only in markets where we can make a significant contribution. We believe in saying no to thousands of projects, so that we can really focus on the few that are truly important and meaningful to us. We believe in deep collaboration and cross-pollination of our groups, which allow us to innovate in a way that others cannot. And frankly, we don’t settle for anything less than excellence in every group in the company, and we have the self- honesty to admit when we’re wrong and the courage to change. And I think regardless of who is in what job those values are so embedded in this company that Apple will do extremely well” (“Apple’s Vision Statement & Mission Statement,” 2016, p. 1).

Apple’s mission statement has also changed over time. The company considers the changing business landscape, which influences the possibilities of what Apple can do. The company recognizes the changing market and industry. Apple’s current mission statement is, “Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad” (“Apple’s Vision Statement & Mission Statement,” 2016, p. 1).

The first on Apple's list of values is that it believes its main purpose as a company is to bring great products to the planet. The company also values simplicity and avoids complexity, be it in hardware or software. This simplicity also extends to only working in markets that the company feels it can contribute to and saying "no" to projects in order to maintain a strong focus on building quality within a few areas. As a company, Apple also believes in maintaining ownership and control over technologies beyond Apple products.

Ultimately, Apple values excellence throughout the entire company, from storefronts to corporate offices, and believes that as a company it can admit when it's wrong and learn from its mistakes. It's also one of the only companies to list "saying no," as a core value, but according to the data from MidAmerica Nazerene University, it does share a number of values with other companies including selectivity, collaboration, simplicity and courage (White, 2015).

In order to continue with this tendency, Apple will need to come in with new products or services. Being a leader and maintaining it is not easy. Apple have the products and services to continue it’s growth, but research and development need to continue, to create new changes in their products and maintain loyalty, because if not, people can start experimenting with other competitors and this can hurt the company.

Apple need to prove that it is not a one man company and need to make urgent changes in order to continue the legacy Steve Jobs have left.
