Improving the security of student data. Since the creation of education systems, schools and colleges have maintained paper records, with student and parent’s personal information. With the pandemic and immediate reliance of distance learning schools and colleges are quickly moving toward digitizing the records, instructing online and need to securely save the information in databases. This movement allows all schools to share educational records electronically with other schools, colleges, and parents and allows students to attend school from anywhere. Protecting the student data has been a minimal concern for educational systems, and is evident in the lack of investment in network protection and cybersecurity. We will research and analyze how Verizon Business is protecting student and educational data on the network and their approach to cybersecurity.

2. Intended clients or customers

The intended clients Verizon Business is trying to reach is any business entity small or large.

3. Business objective statement

Verizon experts help global banks adapt and transform their business. Manufacturing firms capitalize on their valuable data. Global retailers personalize their customer experience. And U.S. government agencies protect their data from security threats. 

4. Application architecture description

The main goal is to provide a secure, mobile network for educational institutions that will allow all employee’s, students and parents access to needed information. The most important part of this application is to have a reliable network that is easily accessible and secure.

5. Information provided to the clients

When student, parent personal information, controlled testing materials or live lectures are added to the network the data will be able accessible from anywhere.

6. Basic requirements

Performance requirements of the application are below:

Cybersecurity is needed to protect student, parents, and educator’s personal information. Most importantly the live lectures must be secure from intruders and educational testing materials must be secure and not be compromised. Since the educational network will be accessed by everyone from employees, students, and parents with their own devices cyber security is important.

Virtual Network is essential to allow users to connect easily to applications from multiple devices and operating systems, whenever and wherever they want. This means a significant amount of traffic must move off the WAN and into public cloud systems that utilize network solutions, like broadband, as a network carrier. The virtual network will allow users to operate efficiently without sacrificing performance or security and provides encrypting and tunneling traffic, even over the public internet, adding an additional layer of security to all of your data.

Summary of physical media and network design for the proposed service (max 200 words)

We will utilize fiber-optic cable as the physical medium for data transmission. Radio transmission will be used for WAN. Teachers, students, and employees will be able to log into a secure VPN with their (.org) email and password. Radio transmission allows connection via wireless. WLAN will be configured for guest as well. In this case, guest will not be able to access the full capabilities of the network.

A. Physical media selection: summary

There are 7 layers to the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model that that are the framework of a network and route data packages end to end. The Physical Layer 1: Actual hardware “cable” sits at this layer and transmits signals over media. Fiber optic cables will be used to connect the LANs, WANs, WLANs to the backbone network. The Data Link Layer 2 : “MAC, switches” Translates binary (or BITs) into signals and allows upper layers to access media. Network Layer 3: “IP, routers” determines how data is sent to the receiving device. It’s responsible for packet forwarding, routing, and addressing. Transport Layer 4: “TCP, UDP, port numbers” coordinates data transfer between system and hosts, including error-checking and data recovery. The Session Layer 5: “Syn/Ack” establishes and terminates connections between devices. It also determines which packets belong to which text and image files. Presentation Layer 6: “Encryption, ASCII, PNG, MIDI” converts data to and from the Application layer. In other words, it translates application formatting to network formatting and vice versa. This allows the different layers to understand each other. Application Layer 7: “SNMP, HTTP, FTP” Most of what the user actually interacts with is at this layer. Web browsers and other internet-connected applications (like Skype or Outlook) use Layer 7 application protocols.

A.1 Physical media consideration: Types of network and transmission distances

We will use digital transmission from a 3rd party “Verizon business” to provide the underlying routers and access to the internet. Verizon business provides 100% fiber-optic network, Spanning over six continents and offering speeds up to 100G, their network will provide the platform needed to support HD video, VOIP or any other modern connectivity to eliminate transmission distance problems.

A.2 Physical media consideration: cost

Fiber optic cables will be used to connect the LANs, WANs, WLANs to the backbone network and it will be providing the speed in the range of 300 Mbps and 500Mbps. Costs vary widely according to where the fiber optics are installed and the purpose.

The cost per linear foot ranges between $1 and $6 including installation.

12-strand single-mode fiber optic costs between $8,500 and $10,000 per mile.

24-strand single-mode fiber optic costs between $2 and $3 per linear foot.

72-strand single-mode fiber optic costs between $10,000 and $12,000 per mile.

96-strand single-mode fiber optic costs between $2 and $4 per linear foot.

96-strand single-mode fiber optic costs between $20,000 and $30,000 per mile.

B. Medium access

1. Within our network, contention can happen when two or more computers try to access the same file at the same time. With our wireless networking, contention can happen when two or more data stations attempt to transmit at the same time over a shared channel. Contention will also occur if no station is designated as a “master station” within our data communications.

1. Error control in our data link layer will be required because our network can be error prone. It’s particularly important in the data link layer because it checks for errors at every hop on the route from source to destination. It’s used to discard any corrupted packet early on and avoid the need to route a corrupted packet all the way to destination. Overall, it’s used to ensure and confirm that all the data frames or packets are transmitted or transferred from sender to receiver with certain accuracy. Additionally, Layer 5 will use “Syn/Ack” to establish and terminate connections between devices. It will also determine which packets coincide with text and image files.

C. Network design

Utilizing both WAN & LAN would be necessary for the completion of this project. WAN will connect all nearby and distance locations. Building will have WLAN and LAN cable to connect multifunction devices, computers, and printers. A managed switch would be ideal because it can provide VLANs (virtual local area network) across the region. Enterprise edge will connect our company with the outside world. Data must be interchanged and secured during transmission.

D. Network layer

LANs will provide access to the internet. Server rooms are connected via LANs. LAN cables run from the server room through a plenum area and to ethernet block on the wall. We will be able to locate each computer connected to the patch panel to provide network patch cables. IP addresses in needed to communicate over a network. DNS (Domain Naming Service) translate your IP address into name such as google.com. Gateways are centralized modem needed to pass data in and out of your network. Your gateway provides an IP address from a pool of address to a given devices. This allows your devices to communicate over the network. An example would be sending an email to a co-worker who works on a different floor.

Securing data is a high priority for Verizon Business. Fiber optic cables will be used to connect the LANs, WANs, WLANs to the backbone network. This will ensure a fast and secure network. Radio transmission will be used for WAN as it has high transmission rates, can cover larger areas, and can penetrate (thinner) walls, plants, furniture etc.
