Open the video case file above. Watch the three videos listed (you should be able to click on the links in the document and the videos will open in your default browser). Read through the rest of the case.

PART 2

Watch this demo video to get an idea of how the technology works:

Cisco TelePresence IX5000 - Collaboration Beyond the Boardroom (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Skim the Cisco product information pages for more details:

Answer the following questions:

1. Specifically, what are the capabilities of Cisco’s IX500 system, and how do they promote collaboration and innovation?

2. Are these capabilities unique to Cisco’s system, or could they be duplicated by another system? Are you aware of any other system that could be a replacement for this (read about Porter’s Five Forces in Ch. 3)?

3. If you have had experience with telecommunication, either business or personal, what are your impressions: 1. What do you think are its strengths? 2. What do you think are its weaknesses? 3. Give two situations for which you think it is ideally suited, and explain why. 4. Give one situation for which you think it is a poor solution. Why?

4. Take your poor solution as an example. If cost were not a barrier, what could you do to make it work well for your poor solution?

5. If current technology were not a barrier, what do you think is the ultimate solution for telecommunication in the future (in other words, how do you think it will function in 100 years)?

PART 3

The UPS Diad V (subject of part 1) was introduced in 2012. The Cisco ix5000 series (subject of part 2) was introduced in 2014. These technologies are 7 and 5 years old, respectively.

Answers to the following questions:

1) Is 5 and 7 years a long or a short time to have a technological product in play without a significant update?

2) Based on your answer to 1, what is your opinion of the strategy of these two companies in waiting to update?
