Milestone #2: Chemistry Unit
Project Formatting Guide: (this is just a suggested way to organize your project, as a paper or PPT)
· Title page/slide (with name, date, and title)
· Table of Contents slide at the beginning (for PPT)
· Glossary section/slide at the end (with your major unit definitions)
· Paragraph 1/Slide 1: Attention Grabber and Statement of Issue: Purpose and importance of paper/presentation. Grab your audience’s attention with a shocking picture or quote or stat. What is your drinking water crisis and water inequality issue that you are reporting on? What topics are you going to teach your audience, why is it important to study the chemistry behind your event?
· Paragraph 2/Slide 2: Introduction (background information on your water scenario): Educate your audience on your topic in more depth. What was your event (what, when, where)? Talk about your water pollution scenario and the drinking water crisis that has been created. What are the specific human activities that caused it (ex. fertilizing lawns, spraying crops, untreated river, oil spill)?
· Paragraph 3/Slide 3-4: “Who Cares Statistics”: Discuss data and shocking stats! How many people were impacted? What was the extent? How bad was it? Monetary costs? Lives lost? Make sure to cite your sources! INCLUDE A GRAPH AND EXPLAIN IT!
· Paragraph 4/Slide 5: Bigger Picture Connection to Society: How many people worldwide do not have access to clean drinking water? Why? What are the social and environmental justice issues surrounding your crisis? Feel free to introduce some points that will make your audience relate to this project better (ex. human activities, civil liberties, environmental justice, water inequality).
· Paragraph 5/Slide 6: Chemistry of Water: Connect to your class notes and discuss the chemical properties and make-up of water. What elements make it up? What kind of bonds are involved? Why is it so important to life? What is so special about water?
· Paragraph 6/Slide 7: Water Quality Parameters: Discuss water quality and connect it to your specific scenario. For example, hardness, pH, alkalinity, acid rain, etc. Also, introduce your major pollutants.
· Paragraph 7/Slide 8-9: Detailed chemistry of your element(s): Apply class content to your issue, by educating your audience (in detail) about the chemistry of the major contaminants in your scenario (symbol, atomic #, periodic table group, any major isotopes, major characteristics). Be explicit in the connection. One slide for EACH pollutant you want to talk about (ex. lead, arsenic, pesticides). Be DETAILED in your research and chemical breakdown.
· Paragraph 8/Slide 10: Human Health Impacts: Do research and go into depth about the specific long AND short term human health problems caused by drinking the water contaminants in your scenario. What impacts do your situation’s chemicals have on the liver, brain, kidneys, etc.? Do they cause cancer (carcinogenic)? This is your chance to educate your audience and dive deeper!
· Paragraph 9/Slide 11: Environmental Impacts: Do research and go in depth on the major environmental impacts of your element(s). It could include how they are acquired as well as how they pollute and contaminate.
· Paragraph 10/Slide 12: Water Clean-Up Plan: here you will talk about current research and environmental clean-up plans. In this section, you must educate your audience as to what your proposed plan is to fix the problem (based on your online research). What does the EPA recommend? How is this situation being addressed now (if at all)? What do you think individuals should do? What are tips?
