1. One of the greatest intellectual debates occurred between Booker T. Washington and Dr. W. E. B. DuBois. Using your course readings, describe the debate between the two over African American education and the best way for African Americans to progress in life. On what issues did Washington and DuBois disagree? What were the similarities or differences between their strategies? What factors might have influenced their views?
2. Self-reliance has been an underlying theme of the course readings. Discuss the theme of self-reliance among African Americans using the NAACP and the African American quest for education as examples.
