MGT 4308: Management Leadership

Self and Observer Assessment Surveys

Note: This assignment should not be completed until after this module’s journal entry has been submitted. Overview: Self-assessments foster self-reflection and can provide you with a starting point for taking action to improve leadership effectiveness. However, self-assessments often do not provide a completely accurate description. Most people subconsciously distort their answers; not because they are lying, but self-perceptions are influenced by inflated or deflated views of yourself, the unconscious need to provide socially acceptable answers, or simple misunderstanding. Asking other people to provide their input on your leadership behaviors may not be 100% reliable either though; they may not have observed you in many leadership situations, they may answer overly favorably or negatively, or they may have personal issues that prevent them from providing clear answers. Therefore, if you average the responses of several observers, you are likely to get an honest picture. Somewhere between your perceptions and multiple observers’ perceptions is likely where the truth lies. In this activity, you will have the opportunity to collect both, and you will use this information to analyze, reflect on, and develop your leadership effectiveness throughout the course. Directions: Step 1: SLPI Online Self-Assessment Follow the steps in the the Leader Instructions for Completing LPI 360 Online document, to register and complete the Student Leadership Practices Inventory (SLPI). This is a self-administered online survey and will measure your perceptions of your leadership behaviors. For more information about the LPI survey, review The LPI: 25 Years of Inspiration and Research. Step 2: Choose Four People That Have Observed You in Working Situations These people might be employees that report directly to you, co-workers, fellow students with which you’ve worked on group projects, peers in a social organization, or teammates. Try to stay away from friends and family members, as their perceptions are more likely to be clouded with emotion. Step 3: Email Observer Assessments Use the provided Observer Email Template document to send your observers an email notifying them that they will receive an email from notifications@lpionline.com, and attach the Observer Instructions for Completing LPI 360 Online document and either the Northouse Observer

Assessment for Females document or the Northouse Observer Assessment for Males document, (send whichever version of the Northouse Observer Assessment is appropriate for you). Make sure you emphasize the importance of their returning the completed assessments to you by early in Module 2 so you will have time to complete your the Module 2 Journal assignment and Milestone 1; both rely on the data you will collect in these assessments and are due by the end of Module 2. Step 4: Refer to the instructions in the Leader Instructions for Completing LPI 360 Online document and add email addresses for your observers in your LPI 360 account. Guidelines for Submission: Complete your self-assessment in the Student Leadership Practices Inventory 360 site. Your instructor will monitor your completion status there and upon submission of your completed self-assessment and your observers’ assessments, will provide a SLPI 360 Individual Feedback Report, which you will need to complete your journal activities in the modules that follow. This assignment is ungraded but the completion of self-assessment and observer assessments will be monitored by the instructor and is required for assignments in the subsequent modules.
