Paper of finance

Name: ___________________________________________________

This is strictly an individual exercise. Your answers should be typed, double spaced, and have 1-inch margins. Save your answers to a word file before uploading it to Blackboard. There are 5 essay questions and each question is worth 30 points.

Use the concepts, theories, vocabulary, and frameworks of principles of management to answer the questions and complete the analysis.

Focus on what the question asks. Do not simply do a “mind dump” and write down everything you read or recall about the topics covered in the course, hoping that the answer to a question is somewhere in there. Unrelated, extraneous material will detract from your answer and make it harder for me to assess whether or not you understand how to answer a question.

Make your answers complete. I cannot grade what you mean to write. I can only grade what you actually write. Be sure to develop your ideas well enough that I will be able to understand your answers.

All the best!

Question 1: This one partly comes from what I posted in my summary for chapter 11. Review the material in chapter 11, and then view the linked video from the film “Office Space”.

So, when the actor in the video states: "It's not that I'm lazy, it's just that I don't care", apply three concepts from chapter 11 that managers could realistically do that would encourage somebody like this to care.

Question 2: Read this article on Gore: https://www.inc.com/magazine/201905/deirdre-van-dyk/w-l-gore-goretex-eptfe-waterproof-material-medical-device-technology.html

and view the following interviews with current Gore employees, and review Section 11.3.

How is this unusual and unique team-based compensation and reward system a driver of greater performance? Would you like to work for W.L. Gore or a company which used the same or similar performance reward structure?

Question 3: Identify and describe the five types of management proposed by the Leadership Grid® approach in Chapter 13. Include specification of the level of concern for people and for production. Provide an example of a person that you think fits in the quadrant of high concern for people and production. Explain your choice.

Question 4: Compare Herzberg’s Motivator-Hygiene Theory to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. What similarities and differences do you see in these two theories of motivation? Which theory do you personally relate to and why?

Question 5: Read about Hofstede’s research on intercultural differences in chapter 6 and compare any two countries using Hofstede’s website (https://www.hofstede-insights.com/product/compare-countries/) on the six dimensions of intercultural differences. Describe the key differences between these two countries in their culture using these dimensions.
