Onboarding involves the process or action of integrating and orienting a new employee into the organization so as to increase overall retention or familiarizing a client or customer with the products and services of the organization so as to create customer loyalty (Stein, 2010). Onboarding in the human resource can be done globally through the onboarding process and with the consideration of the important elements in onboarding in the global environment.
The onboarding process involves seven steps (Bauer & Erdogan, 2011). The first step is the preparation of colleagues for the new employee. Before the arrival of the new employees, the manager should notify other employees in person or by email. This should inform the on the roles of new employees and enable them, welcome new employees. Second is make the workstation of the new employee ready to go. This would create a good first impression. Thirdly, make all programs, electronic files, and software ready and accessible to the new employee. Fourth, make introductions between the employee and the key people and departments and the day of arrival. This would help them understand how the organization works and enable them to know where to get what they want. Plan a team lunch to bring the employee and the team together. Sixth, allocate plenty of training time for the new employee and lastly, conduct a follow up on the new employee.
When onboarding in the global environment, the key factors to consider include culture alignment and Existence of a management team. Before onboarding from overseas, it is essential to ensure that the way of living and working of the employee is not so different from that of the existing employees. This would make it easy to create a connection between the two parties. Also, having a management team in the organization helps them understand what they are expected to do and what is expected of them.
