ASSIGNMENT TITLE: The Importance of Material Testing Standards and How This Affects an Engineer's Ethical Responsibility to Protect the Public ASSIGNMENT TYPE: Group Presentation OBJECTIVES: To deliver a joint Powerpoint presentation on the importance of material testing standards for Professional Engineers. OVERVIEW: You are required to work together in teams of 3 to develop and deliver a joint Powerpoint presentation (6 minutes total presentation time) on the importance of material testing standards for Professional Engineers. Your presentation should address the following topics at minimum;

• What social and environmental responsibilities are Materials Engineers required to uphold according to the Engineers Ireland Code of Ethics?

• What is materials testing? Why is it important for Engineers?

• Why are standards needed in materials testing? Give some examples of materials testing standards you found.

• How do these standards relate to an Engineers ethical responsibility to protect the public?

• Find news stories (old or recent) about structures that have caused injury to people as a result of a materials failure or non-conformance with industry standards.

Each student should present a subset of the slides (2 minutes each) and then handover to the next team member to continue the presentation. DELIVERABLES: Each student must present their contribution to the work on the day and must also upload the complete Powerpoint presentation from their group to Moodle. PEER REVIEW: Remember that this is a group assignment and each team member is expected to contribute to both the creation and delivery of the presentation material. To ensure fair distribution of the work among all team members, you will be required to submit a peer review assessment for your colleagues. GRADING: This assignment is worth 7.5% of the overall CA mark (Total 30%) DEADLINE: You must complete the presentation at the time assigned by the lecturer and upload your slides to Moodle.
