Rita Manning, who makes her professional home in the Department of Philosophy at San Jose State University, is a philosopher with interests that range widely from feminist ethics to philosophy of music. She has published widely and also does philosophy through music and drama. She's played Frau Nietzsche in a play by her colleague, Peter Hadreas. She collaborated again with Peter in a concert version of Jean-Jacque Rousseau's opera Le Devin du Village.

Perhaps best known for her work in The Ethics of Care, Manning has also long been a champion of many social justice causes. She was instrumental in getting philosophy courses for university credit into the Santa Clara County Jail. Thus both enriching the lives of inmates with the joy of doing philosophy now, while also setting them on the way to greater educational achievements once they are released.

Rita also served as the chair of the philosophy department at San Jose State University in the early years of the new millennium. She was both a great administrative leader and also a constant source of help and strength to those around her. Her ethic of always being prepared to do whatever was needed to help students succeed is a powerful force in the department even to this day.

In an age where the field of philosophy has been seeking to get more women involved and integrated Rita Manning serves as the finest example of what a philosopher can be not only in an academic sense but also in the lives of the people around her. Be you a colleague, student, inmate at the county jail, or member of the greater academic community Rita Manning has made positive contributions to your life.
