Following are the steps to create a virtual machine in Amazon Web Services:
1. Open the AWS account link. This link is available in your credential file shared earlier
via Canvas message. If you have not received the file, then email me at
vsingh@umsl.edu.
2. Provide your user name and temporary password and click on “Sign in.”

3. In the above form, provide the old temporary password along with a new password to
update. After confirming the password, you will login to your account’s management
console.
In all future logins, use the new password.

4. Click on “Services” or search for EC2 service and open it.

5. There are multiple AWS data centers globally. Choose the location of the data center to
“N. Virginia.”

6. Click on “Instances” to check all running instances. This page will list all available
instances. Click on “launch instance.”
7. As discussed in the lecture video, the VMs are available with different operating systems.
We will select “Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Base” free tier eligible 64-bit AMI.

8. Choose “General purpose” t2.micro instance type and click on “Review and Launch.” As
discussed in the lecture, in this step, we select hardware configuration. VMs are available
in different hardware configurations.
9. Click on “Review and Launch” to start the VM. A key pair is a security mechanism used
to set up the administrator password for the VM.

10. Choose “Create a new key pair” from the dropdown list in the following form.
Provide a “key pair name”. Do not forget to download the key pair. Save the key-pair file in your
computer locally. The key pair file has .pem file extension.
After saving the key pair file, click on “Launch instance” to start the instance. This step may take
a couple of minutes to start the VM.

VM is now launching. Click on “View instances” to see all available VMs.

11. In the name field, provide your full name for the VM’s name.

12. You can now see that your virtual machine is running now.
Right-click on the VM and select/choose to connect.

There are two selections – (1) session manager and (2) RDP client. Select RDP client.
Click on “Download remote desktop file” and save it.
13. In the following form, click on “Get Password.” This step will take .pem file and generate
the password for the Administrator for the Windows VM.

14. Click on “Browse” and provide the .pem file which you have downloaded in the earlier
step.

15. Click on “Decrypt Password.”
16. You can now see the windows Administrator password for the virtual machine. Click on
“Download Remote Desktop file.”

Save the remote desktop file.

Click on “Connect”

Provide the password which you received before.
