Alternative therapies or nonpharmacological interventions for pain relief can be the complete form of pain relief for the mother or it can be complementary to pharmacological interventions. Examples of nonpharmacological interventions can include, acupressure, position changes, imagery, and other relaxation techniques such as deep breathing (Silbert, et al. 2017). The use of a doula can also be very beneficial in helping the mother through childbirth pain, she can provide emotional, physical, and spiritual support during the process. She can help the mother guide her through the pain by helping her with breathing exercises, playing her favorite music, and helping her change positions to where she is most comfortable to ease her pain. The nurse is also beneficial during the time of childbirth, she will ensure the mother is properly educated on the different ways she can experience pain relief, and give her the options to choose what is best for her. The nurse can also demonstrate breathing techniques and build a therapeutic relationship with her so she can talk her through the process when she is in pain, as well as helping reposition her into the necessary and more comfortable positions.

Opioid analgesics can be used during birth for their potent effect, the downfall of these medications is that they can cause maternal respiratory depression and fetal CNS depression, which is why they should be used cautiously (Silbert, et al. 2017). These medications can include, Stadol, morphine sulfate, Nubain, Demerol, and fentanyl. Anesthetics can also be given to block spinal nerve roots as well as the nerve fibers that travel with them, this is considered epidural anesthesia which its overall job is to provide pain relief during labor and birth through the blocks (Silbert, et al. 2017). Anesthesia allows for gentle and controlled birth, with less trauma to an immature fetal skull.

A non-pharmalogical interventions that may be used during labor is to have the support of a doula. A doula is a woman who is experienced in childbirth and postpartum support. They provide physical, emotional, and informational support prenatally, during labor and birth, and even at home in the postnatal period (Silbert & Pillitteri, 2017). Another non-pharmalogical intervention is to teach the technique of relaxation. Teaching the relaxation technique allows the abdominal wall from becoming to tense, it serves as a distraction technique, while the women concentrates on relaxing it distracts her from the pain. Having the women bring her favorite candle or aromatherapy mixed with the relaxation technique can also help with relaxing her.

Pharmalogical interventions that can be used are different types of medications. One classification that can be used is a narcotic analgesic. The different mediations in this classification that are used is fentanyl, morphine, nalbuphine, and butorphanol tartrate. Potential side effects on the fetus from this classification is respiratory depression. Another classification is a lumbar epidural block. Medications in this classification include a local anesthetic, bupivacaine, ropivacaine. Potential side effects on the fetus from these drugs include differences in response in the first few days of life.
