SCHOOL READINESS PROGRAM

The Priority Center offers several different programs that teach parents how to create a safe home environment for children. School Readiness is one of those programs that is for parents

with children 0-8 years old. The program is 3 months long. This program assists parents in identifying developmental or learning

delays as soon as possible, and then working with them to provide resources.

Specialists in the program will do an assessment of the child and link parents to supportive services such as counseling or Medi-Cal

enrollment. In addition, they provide community trainings for parents or professionals working with children in English,

Spanish, and Vietnamese.

CONNECTION TO COURSE CONTENT

This resource can be used for parents of children in the infant, toddler, preschool, and grade school age. The main purpose of the program is to help parents identify any developmental or learning delays their child may have through specialists and then be able to receive resources

from one place. Parents at this time should be paying attention to their child’s development as throughout all of these stages they will change and develop many new skills and milestones.

For example, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (2021), a toddler’s growth and development should include physical skills such as walking alone, kicking a ball, etc…. With

regard to social skills, they should be imitating the behavior of others and be enthusiastic about the company of other children. Cognitively, they should be playing pretend, and sorting shapes

and colors.

If parents are not seeing this kind of development, reaching out to this program might be helpful to understand their child better. They can get resources and professional feedback on

how to better be there for their child. When families know the best way to parent their children it will serve to strengthen the parent-child relationship. This program also ensures the child is

ready for school and ready to learn; leading to a positive educational experience!
