What is the Impact of Low Employee Motivation Levels within Organizations?

This research paper highlighted (Hayley & Shee, 2016) the definition of motivation that is defined as attitudes and factors that guide employees to perform in a different way. Employee motivation can be occurred when employees are conscious of that their behavior that let them win rewards. In this case, they react in a certain way in order to match their needs and to be satisfied. It is difficult to measure the level of motivation in any business because there are different factors motivate employees and they are variable continuously. In addition, each organization implements a different way to motivate its employees to reach its goals. There are some factors that organization can follow to maintain high levels of employee motivation. For example, sharing knowledge and experience, offering learning opportunities, creating an effective employee recognition system and building a sustainable and supportive community around the workplace. The lack of level of employee motivation can lead to decreased investment in the workforce, as they do not care about the outcomes. The organization can be succeeded if it has strong, motivating and effective employees. The employee motivation brings a value for the business as it clarifies the difference between accomplishment and failure. Maintain motivated employees can be the most important component in a successful business, as they will achieve the business goals and objectives. Employees are the essential resources in the organization and they are a competitive advantage for the organization. There are many benefits for having highly motivated workforces such as they can improve business performance. Motivated employees have the ability to solve problems easily, maintain a high level of innovation and creativity and improve a business growth, and increase a high level of satisfaction. In fact, there is a strong link between employee motivation and productivity in the workplace. Hayley & Shee stated that one of the main reasons behind a business failure is unmotivated employees. Some organizations fail to create motivation environment for their employees. There are some factors that organization suffers from low employee motivation such as employees don’t have good relationships with managers or leaders, don’t like their daily works, and don’t show commitment to their job. The causes of appearance and ways of staff`s demotivation solving in organizations

Halushchak (2016) Argued that Motivation is an effective activity that helps an organization to achieve its goals and provides employee’s needs. The motivation provides employees the ability to work with any challenges they may face during their daily job. The system of employee motivation has to be efficient and easy to change in order to enhance the business production process and sales, increases the profit, uses the tangible and intangible resources productivity, and efficiency. It also, increases the commitment level in an organization, increases employee salary and efficiency of their activities, increases working hard, and reduces the employee turnover. The table describe the Causes of demotivation appearance in the workplace and some actions should be taken to eliminate the employee demotivation. Some leaders perform in a negative attitude to solve problems or may not take a fast action to solve a problem. A bad manager can undermine his or her department. A company focuses only on an approach of performance-related pay and believe that money is the only tool used to encourage employee. Some organizations provide only a financial reward to encourage them to perform well. Person Demotivation in Organizational Life

Sahar(2014) argued that there are some factors affect negatively the motivation that lead to decrease employee ambition. Also, the demotivation can decline the income in the organization. The reasons of lack of motivation can be clarified into three factors. The first factor of demotivation is financial sources. The second factor is the work environment initiatives. The third factor is the outside environment related to the organization indirectly.

1. Financial Sources of Demotivation

Each organization can reward its workforce in five different ways based on an understanding of their individual characteristic. There are work paid for the piece of work done (piecework), distributing equity to the founders or partners, profit share, divide bonuses based on performance and performance-related pay. Some employees see that performance related to pay is the best way to motivate workers to perform well and to work hard. The basic reason for this method is to recruit, retain and motivate the employees into the organization. The organization prefers to maintain the high-quality employees and it encourages them to stay longer by giving a reward. This method explains that a good performance is valued and observed but the bad performance is not. The purpose of giving money is to motivate employee to work

effectively and proficiently. On the other hand, the method of performance related to pay can increase the demotivation for the new employees. The Organization may be paid for employees who have more experience and they expected to perform well, while new workers still learning. Sometimes the employee demotivation can be caused motivation to others. The method of payment can motivate employees and encourage them to work hard. It also, can demotivate some employees. The organization should have a good system for both employees in order to maintain and to improve their performance.

2- Inside Organization Demotivation Factors

The first way to increase the motivation in the workplace is influencing employees feeling. Workers may don’t feel safe in their organization. The fear of job losses can affect negatively employee performance and they put less effort in their tasks. The organizational transition can cause stress and anxiety for employees that lead to rise employee’s demotivation. The large workload or less resources lead to increase the demotivation. Sometimes, a new business eliminates the career paths and reduce the number of hiring employees that can build fear among employees to increase their effort and build a lack of job interest. As a result, these can occur a low of motivation. Feelings of physical and emotional exhaustion, isolation from others, and reduced or ignored employee achievement has the big effect on employee performance. There are some factors inside the organization can affect negatively the employee’s performance.

Motivation in the Workplace to Improve the Employee Performance

Vinay (2014) stated that motivation is a factor causes employees to achieve goals and drive employees to work productively and efficiently. Motivation has a direct effect on employee behaviors that motivate them to perform in a certain way. There are two factors of motivation that impact employee performance: extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. Employees may want to satisfy themselves, achieve a reward meet manager expectation or may have personal needs. These factors can guide employees to shape their quality of work. Vinay brought an example of a student who works hard to reach her or his goal to get a high grade in the class that indicates, every

person has different motivations to reach a goal. Almost all organizations need motivated employees because there are happy, productive and loyal. As a result, employees will find the work environment is a perfect place to make an effort to attain the organization goals and objective. Employees need to be encouraged in the workplace to satisfy themselves and to perform productivity. There are some employees who money motivated and others prefer recognition and rewards. Some employees feel satisfied and get self-motivated if they accomplish or achieve personal or professional goals. Some employees feel motivated if they get recognition from managers or employers. Motivation can increase employee`s responsibility and loyalty at the workplace. There is a strong relationship between employee motivation and performance. Employee performance depends on the level of the organization motivation provided to its employees. A company needs to work efficiently to create ways to motivate its employees to receive and enhance the employee performance and productivity. Providing motivation factors into the organization create challenges for leaders and managers. Demotivation employees have a negative impact on producing low quality work. They avoid working hard or do their tasks, don’t do their effort to satisfy themselves or leaders and bring negative atmosphere into the organization. Demotivation employees are the major problem in the company.

Goal-Setting Theory of Motivation

Locke and Latham (2011) created a motivation theory which is a goal-setting theory. The theory highlights the importance of the relationship between goals and performance.

Employees can perform effectively when the goals are clearly defined, when responsibility and acceptance are occurred, and when the evaluation is related to the outcomes.

The figure below shows that, there are two cognitive determinants of behavior, values and intentions (goals). A goal can be referred to the individual activity that wants to accomplish. A value can be related to one’s `emotion, an individual’s value is a strong feeling of doing something that reflect its behavior. Difficult goals need energy, high effort and raise constant effort to be done. A Goal can help employees to increase their motivation to achieve the required goal levels. Reaching the goal can increase satisfaction and motivation, don’t achieving the goal can impact the level of motivation.

Figure 1. General model of goal-setting theory
