Anti-bullying of LGBTQs

In this paper, I shall be addressing anti-bullying of LGBTQ students in schools. There are many states that address the harassment of high school or elementary students although not all schools are inclusive. These protections are in the form of legislative law, ethical codes of conduct of the teachers and other regulations. There are those states that our regulations and codes of conduct, others use policies including Alabama Alaska among others. Though many schools in Colorado district have embraced unequivocal policies against bullying of transgender and gay students, some suggest that singling out of some students is not necessary to create a good and safe environment for the marginalized students.

According to the report that was released recently in Colorado, the states large transgender, lesbian, bisexual and gay, an advocacy group, 82% of the schools have revised their anti-bullying policies. In 2012, there was a paltry 32% of the schools which were revising their anti-bullying policies. Compared to the current 82%, there is a tremendous improvement. These revisions are as a result of the passage of the law that vetoes bullying of students based on their gender identity or sexual orientation. The bill also had provisions for schools to be given the necessary funding to help them implement the policies (Page, 2017).

Despite the passage of such policies, there are some hindrances where some schools believe that they do not have LGBTQ students in their ranks. Despite this lack of uncertainty, schools have to implement these policies to ensure that anytime they have such students, there will be policies that protect them. For instance, the report mentioned three district schools that are yet to implement the policies including Aurora, Adams 14 and Westminster, which were yet to update the anti-bullying policies to conform to the law. Some school districts such as Douglas County school district are in the process of updating the policies (Page, 2017).

According to an article on "Bullying of Lesbian and gay youth: a Qualitative investigation," bullying is an intricate sensation which helps us understand the dynamics of bullying, especially among the youth in schools. The report states that the attitudes of school administrators, teachers and parents may lead to victimization of children (Newman, Daley & Solomon, 2009). The article also states that societal attitudes like homophobia foster bullying and most of the bullying are from verbal harassment. From this paper, it is clear that children who are sexually oriented to being lesbian or gay report more harassment than the heterosexual students and children. There are clear barriers to address bullying of transgender, lesbian and gay students as compared to other students. The report also states that the sexual minority youth, that is gay and lesbian, do not seek support from even their parents because they feel that they may receive more victimization from the parents.

Ethnocentrism describes an individuals or a group's tendency to view their own culture as being superior to practice and culture to other groups. Dealing with this groups view on their own superiority is difficult since each group has their own standards. The lesbians and gay view themselves as being superior to the heterosexual group and at the same time they view themselves as practicing what ought to be practiced by everybody. On the other hand, racism is based on the fact that human beings can be divided into different races. Each Race views itself as being superior to the other. In this context, the LGBTs view themselves as being superior to other groups. Helping LGBT becomes a difficult task based on the difficult stand they have that they practice a better culture as compared to the other groups (Griffiths, Keirns, Strayer, Rydzewski, Scaramuzzo, Sadler, Vyain, Bry, & Jones, 2015).
