Foundations of Leadership

Final Essay

Leadership Case Study: Shackleton’s Enduring Leadership

Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917) provides the perfect lens through which to synthesize our own summer semester–long exploration of leadership (a much safer and warmer exploration to be sure….)

After reading Lansing’s account of Shackleton’s incredible voyage, write a creative synthesis/analysis of his leadership which draws on multiple leadership issues, approaches, and frameworks we reviewed over the course of the summer. Drawing on that material, assess Shackleton’s strengths, blind spots, mistakes, and share insights for YOU as a leader from his spectacular expedition.

Your paper should demonstrate your mastery and synthesis of both “Endurance” and relevant content from the rest of the course. Amaze and delight me with careful selection of key material, thoughtful reflections, and clear connections to Shackleton – all blended into a concise, well-organized, well-argued and supported essay.

Successful papers will make specific and explicit use of relevant readings and films.

Your paper should be between 5-6 pages, double spaced.

Please put your name on a cover sheet and there only.
