1. What are some of the factors that might influence the geographic distribution of the tweets you see?
a. At the world scale?
Global events
b. At the scale of the United States?
Games such as Super bowl, political topics, and pop culture topics.
2. How is this map different than the maps you posted on Packback? Hint: maps can be static or dynamic…
This map is dynamic unlike the maps that we posted on Packback, which were static.
3. What do you like about this map?
a. Do you have any critiques of it? What is missing? What would you add?
I think one good thing about this map is that is can be zoomed in and out. One can also see tweets that are trending at different parts around the world. I think that this map works well the way it is. I do not see something that is missing and thus I do not think there is anything that I would add to it.
4. If you have a twitter account, make a tweet (Wait a few minutes) and see if you can locate it. Is the map picking up your tweet?
I could not locate my tweet after I took a few minutes after posting it.
5. Explore Temple University by zooming in to the street scale… What are people tweeting about around Temple? This is what I found.
This is what I found: #traffic

Click on (view more analytics) on the left – it will give you the analytics of the area that appears on your screen. Consider the following questions.
In the United States?
The popular tweet in the United States is #superbowl
In another country?
The popular tweet in Brazil is #worldcancerday
In the town you grew up in?
The popular tweet in my home country is #positivefeeling
7. Look for something in a foreign language like the day of the week. What does the geographic distribution like? What does the distribution tell us about language and culture?
I selected LaLiga, which is Spanish soccer league and the leading tweets are talking are talking about #golazo. This shows how soccer is a very important part of the Spanish language and culture.
8. What is an API? (look it up)
API refers to Application Programming Interface, which is normally created to allow developers to interact with a given technology. For the case of Twitter, there is an open API external developers can develop technology that is reliant on Twitter’s data.
9. How is ‘rest API’ being used on the map? Both versions of the map use the same API. Visit here – This is the ‘about,’ section I told you about earlier… PLEASE CLICK ON EACH SUBHEADING WITH A CHECK NEXT TO IT AT THE TOP LEFT SIDE OF THE PAGE FOR MORE INFO ABOUT THE REST API. http://v3.maptimize.com/
Rest API allows one to delete, update, or create a point on the map and this brings about instant results.
10. Pick three key words or hashtags to explore – describe where these tweets are concentrated and take snips of their geographic location. Why do you think they exhibit the geographic pattern you observe?
One of the hashtags that I searched was #championsleague. The tweets on this hashtag were concentrated in London, England. The reason for this is because soccer is a very popular sport in the UK and this week there will be Champions league soccer on Tuesday and Wednesday. The second hashtag that I searched was #trump. There were 232 tweets about #trump across the United States. This must be politics related since they concentrate on the United States, especially following the recent government shutdown and other political developments centering on the US President. The third hashtag that I searched was #superbowl. There were 2,287 tweets in the United States. I think this is so because this is a very popular sport in America.
11. Pick 2 geographic areas. (For example Cleveland and West Hollywood) What are the most popular tweets in these areas? Zoom into the city and use the analytics function…
One of the areas that I picked was Las Vega. The most popular tweets in the city of Las Vegas included #lasvegas, #vegas, #love, #family, and #friends.
The Second city that I explored was Fresno. The most popular tweets include #fresno, #art, #superbowl, #2moonz, and #blue.
