LAB 12: CHECKING RESULTS OF GENETIC SCREEN

OBJECTIVES

1. Observe and record the results of the genetic screen of modified yeast.

2. Interpret the data.

BEFORE LAB

1. Read through the handout before lab.

2. Complete the pre-lab quiz before lab.

LAB SAFETY

1. Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling agar plates.

2. Clean your workstation before and after the procedure.

3. Wear closed-toed shoes and secure loose hair and clothing.

4. Dispose of agar plates in marked biohazard waste containers only.

5. Wash your hands after the procedure, even if you have been wearing gloves.

GENERAL NOTES ON LAB

1. In this lab, you will observe and record the results of your genetic screen.

2. You will also work with your group on interpreting the results and creating your paper. You should expect to stay for the entire lab period to work on your paper.

GENETIC SCREEN

1. Record the results of your genetic screen in Table 1. Be sure to label all of your

observations. This table is for your purposes, so make sure the results are clearly

recorded.

2. Take a picture of your results to include in your presentation and paper. If you

do not have a camera or a phone, your instructor will take a picture for you.

POST-LAB

1. Wipe down your workstation with ethanol or Lysol.

2. Throw away all gloves and paper towels.

3. Wash your hands.

4. Dispose of agar plates in the biohazard waste containers.

5. You will not turn in this handout for a grade. There is no post-lab activity for

this week.
