Traditionally, graduating seniors at Penn State donate to a fund to make a class gift. Past gifts include the Lion Shrine, renovation of historical landmarks, a plaza honoring veterans, and a solar panel array. Within the past decade, gifts have focused more on student services, including a food bank for low income students, an initiative to reduce textbook prices, and funding for more mental health services for students.

Suppose that the next class gift provides for scholarships, including one to be given specifically to a World Campus student. Furthermore, suppose that the recipient is to be selected by a committee of current World Campus students. Your group will be playing the role of that committee.

Read through the candidate descriptions below, and then deliberate with your group about the options for awarding the scholarship. While you should attempt to reach a consensus by the end of the 48 hour period, remember that practicing effective deliberation--the process itself--is more important for this activity than the eventual decision you reach.

Candidate 1

· Background: Lives in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA. Has completed an Advanced Certificate in Turfgrass Management, and wants to continue on for a bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass to advance in his field.

· Description: Started out as a golf caddy when he was 16, and has been working at golf courses ever since. Currently is the youngest assistant manager of a golf course in Pennsylvania, and hopes to be the youngest general manager after earning his degree.
