Lab Assignment: Karyotyping
Instructions:
Refer to Chapter 10 and Chapter 13 in the textbook and the file “Karyotyping Background
Information” for this lab activity.
Karyotyping Exercise
Pre-lab questions.
Answer the following questions in your lab notebooks. Not everything will be found in your
textbook. Use the internet to help you find the answers:
1. What chromosomal change(s) is/are the cause of each of the following human conditions?
a. Down’s Syndrome: b. Edwards Syndrome: c. Patau Syndrome:
2. Which of the human chromosomes is the longest?
3. Of the two human sex chromosomes, which is longer, the X or the Y?
4. In what phase of cell division are cells arrested in order to perform a chromosome spread
and karyotype?

Record your work in your lab notebook:

a. Take a screen shot of each completed karyotype (there will be three). b. Use each image to make a figure. c. Include Figure # and a descriptive title for each image.
5. Discussion a. A few sentences about your conclusions. b. What are your diagnoses for Patients A, B, and C?
Click on the link provided, and complete the karyotyping exercise. Read the introductory
information, and then click the “patient histories” button at the bottom of the screen. Then finish
each patient’s karyotype by clicking on the patient links and double clicking on the location where
each given chromosome should be placed. Take a screen shot of each completed karyotype. These
images will become figures for your lab assignment.
