For the Final in this course, there will be two options. Make sure to view the assignment directions and point value in module 7.
Option 1: Write a 750 word paper on a juvenile program proposal. Many juvenile programs started with someone coming up with an idea, writing it down and then executing it. The proposal should be something that you believe is important in our community or the community you plan to live in. An example of a program in our community is Teen Court. Juveniles who are first time offenders of misdemeanors may be referred to Teen Court in lieu of going to court. Juveniles are usually referred by law enforcement officers Judges, or juvenile court counselors. There are certain criteria that must be met. The juvenile must admit his guilt and have support of the parent. There is then a mock court appearance. Other juveniles who have been through the program previously are the attorneys and Juries. The jury will (within certain limits) decide the punishment of the offender. The punishment is usually community service, classes, essays and working for a number of teen court sessions for future participants. The Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) council often provides grants to programs in the community. In Module 7 readings I have posted a announcement from JCPC looking for new programs to fund in the community. This announcement from JCPC will give insight into the questions you will be answering in your proposal.
My program will be called “Teen Drug and Mental Counseling”, and I chose option 1 to present this program. I chose this program because there are not many programs available for teens that not only recognizes the drug abuse or addiction, but also recognizes that a teen might also have mental health problems. According to the APA (American Psychological Association) teens struggle with mental illness in combination with alcohol and or drug abuse, and there rare not many programs that offer them help for both conditions. My program will offer teens the proper help needed to help them with their mental health struggles, as well as work with them in providing drug counseling.
In my paper, I will give an example of what a dual diagnosis is in combination with drug addiction. I will give examples of what treatment could be used to help teens and also provide outside resources for the teen as well as their family, since many families have generational mental health issues in combination with alcohol and or drug abuse. The goal of my program is to not just work with the teens, but to also work with their parents or caregivers because the program will not work unless the parents are also involved in it.
