Juvenile Justice Interviews- Week 2 SAMPLE
Weeks 1–5
In this course, you will interview an individual who works directly with youth in juvenile corrections and discuss your findings with classmates. Complete a portion of the project each week, as detailed below.
This cumulative project provides you with the opportunity to practice your skills in listening, taking notes, collaborating with others, and summarizing critical information—all key skills for working in law enforcement. Additionally, it allows you to network with professionals currently employed in the field to benefit from their experienced perspectives.
Week 1 – Prepare for Interview
· Consider where you might reach out to interview a youth corrections officer or someone who works directly with youth in juvenile corrections, such as a nurse, teacher, or administrator.
· Preview the questions in the interview template (found in Week 3 – Conduct Interview) and the Wk 5 - Future of the Juvenile Justice System Presentation assignment.
· Think about any additional questions you might like to ask during your interview.
Week 2 – Schedule Interview
· Schedule an interview with a youth corrections officer or someone who works directly with youth in juvenile corrections, such as a nurse, teacher, or administrator.
I scheduled an interview with Joseph Maffia a juvenile correctional administrator for the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
I will conduct the interview via Zoom or by phone whichever is more accommodating to the candidate.
· Read the questions in the interview template and the Wk 5 - Future of the Juvenile Justice System Presentation assignment. Write any additional questions you’d like to ask during your interview.
I would ask what one recommendation you would make to improve the delivery of services in juvenile corrections?
· Post the following to the Juvenile Justice Interviews discussion:
· a description of your candidate’s title or role
· how you plan to contact them for your interview
· at least 1 additional question specific to their role that you will want to ask
I would post this here in the Cumulative Assignment folder and also repost it as an assignment for Week 2.
Week 3 – Conduct Interview
· Interview the youth corrections officer or other professional candidate you selected in Week 1 who works directly with youth in juvenile corrections. Use the interview template below as a guide, and note your candidate’s responses to your questions.
· Post the responses from your completed interview template to the Juvenile Justice Interviews discussion.
Interview Template
1. What is your job title? What do you do in your role? What aspects of the juvenile justice system do you work with? How do you help juveniles at risk?
2. Why did you choose this career? What do you enjoy about working with juveniles? What are the biggest challenges?
3. What have you learned from your mistakes (or others’ mistakes) while working with juveniles?
4. What policy, procedure, or other aspect of the juvenile justice system would you change to improve it?
5. (Write your own question here.)
Week 4 – Interview Collaboration
· Read 1 of the interviews posted by a classmate.
· Search 1 of the following websites for a report that contains current information related to the responses in the interview. Choose a report that could be helpful or interesting to the person interviewed that you would recommend to them:
· National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges: Publications
· National Center for Juvenile Justice
· National Criminal Justice Reference Service: Juvenile Justice
· National Juvenile Court Data Archive
· RFK National Resource Center for Juvenile Justice
· Juvenile Justice Information Exchange
· National Juvenile Justice Network
· Write a summary of the online report.
· Explain how the information from it might benefit this individual during their employment in juvenile corrections.
· Post your 100-175-word reply to the Juvenile Justice Interviews discussion as a response to the original interview.
Week 5 – Presentation
Include in your assignment due this week:
· An executive summary of at least 2 of the ideas shared in the interviews from the discussion in Weeks 2-4
· Commentary on how the ideas from the interviews might benefit your local area
