I approach you in the newsroom and say: “I’ve got a source who tells me Ben Roethlisberger is announcing his retirement tomorrow.” In your discussion, respond to that statement, recognizing that if my source is right, we have a blockbuster story...but if my source is wrong, we’re going to look like idiots.
