Police Brutality and African American Males
Progress
The research question was what are some of the factors related to African American males being targets of police brutality at disproportionate rates? The main progress in this topic is that racism is said to be one of the main factors behind police brutality against African American males (Unnever, 2018). African Americans have been racially stereotyped as aggressive and crime-prone people with African American women being less considered to be a threat to the police force (Unnever, 2018). According to studies, police tend to fear African American males, always suspecting that they are criminals or individuals who are about to commit crime, and armed and that is why they tend to be brutal towards them.
Problems
The main challenges or obstacle I see in developing my research question is that there are limited researches conducted to determine the factors that drive the police to be brutal towards the African American males (Unnever, 2018). With limited research, it means that there are minimal literature readings available for review and therefore, I must conduct a research and get first-hand information from the police force (Unnever, 2018). The main challenge that I might face is interviewing individuals in the police force about the factors that may have driven either of them into being brutal towards African American suspects since there are strict consequences for individuals founds to have violated the police policies and professional ethics.
Plans
The main plan towards addressing these challenges is developing a discrete research methodology. The discrete research methodology will focus on maintaining the privacy of the respondents, allowing them to give honest recounts of when they engaged in police brutality and the factors that led to their choice of the course of action (Unnever, 2018). The use of questionnaires and survey questions that do not require the entry of identifying information would be used to ensure that correct information is received to determine the factors driving police brutality towards African American males.
