The account in our text tells about the children in Romanian orphanages who faced emotional distress and psychological damage at very young ages. These experiences, albeit traumatic, were not insurmountable. That is how resilience is defined.   A severe risk that threatens normal development must be present, according to the author’s of our text. A favorable outcome must result, despite the negative situation and the potential lasting negative impact. In the case of the orphans, the children were adopted and placed into healthy and functional environments. Their development was tracked and positive developmental outcomes were noted. By providing the children with positive environments, the negative impacts on their early life experiences were interrupted. “The ability of so many children to recover from truly horrific conditions is a testament to human strength and resilience in the face of severe adversity,” (Baumgardner & Crothers, 2009, p. 58). The children were able to bounce back from severe trauma and lead normal and healthy lives. Resiliency can be found in children who are raised by parents with mental illnesses, in poverty, or in abusive or unstable homes. These at-risk children can overcome their situations and demonstrate healthy and positive developmental results.

My friends who know me very well and know what I have gone through throughout my life have told me I am very resilient; however, I never really knew or wanted to believe that I fit that description until I read chapter four of our textbook. I have encountered a lot of negative experiences such as my parents divorce, the loss of my daughter and my best friend, just to name a few. Somehow, I bounced back although the pain continues to be in my heart, I found it within myself to move forward. The chapter explained that resilient individuals are able to regain their composure and confidence to move forward with their lives, in which I did (Baumgardner & Crothers, 2009). Neither of my three sons replaced my daughter but after her loss I grieved, I fought for her justice, then came to peace with her passing. At first I did not believe I was going to have a family after her, but as my friends say, my resiliency pushed me to move forward. The textbook further explained the foundations of resilience, one being able to change key features of themselves in response to changing their circumstances (Baumgardner & Crothers, 2009). After my daughter passed, I took better care of myself, my character and whole demeanor changed. I would say that changed helped me meet my husband with whom I know have three sons with. I would say individuals with resiliency do not want to suffer the same fate, so they change themselves to not repeat a cycle. For example, I come from a family that has had plenty of divorce, my parents are divorced. Therefore, I told myself that I did not want to be part of the divorce rate and when I marry, I would want it to happen once in my life.
