JASP Exercise 1 Instructions

1) Assuming you have already made an account, go directly to rollapp.com/app/jasp and click the blue button, “Launch JASP Online.” Scroll all the way down and click “Launch JASP with limited capabilities.”

2) Click the blue button in the top left corner, “File”, then “Data Library.” Open the folder labeled, “Descriptives.” Double click the data file named “Sleep.” This will open the dataset.

3) This dataset is of a study investigating how people’s sleep is affected by whether or not they take a sleeping pill. Column one of the dataset, labeled “extra” represents the amount of extra sleep each participant received (if the number is negative, that means they got less sleep than normal). Column two, labeled “group” represents the two groups in the study. In this column, a “1” represents the participants that did not take a sleeping pill, and a “2” represents participants that did take a sleeping pill. Column three, labeled “ID” is just an identification number given to each participant and can be ignored for this exercise.

4) The goal of this exercise to find the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and skewness. To do so, first click “descriptives”, then “descriptive statistics.” In this new window, click on our main variable of interest, “extra” and click the arrow to put it into the “Variables” box. Next, we want descriptive statistics for each of our groups, so click “group” and click the arrow to put it into the “Split” box. This will split the data output into our two groups (remember: a 1 is did not take a sleeping pill and a 2 is did take a sleeping pill).

5) Click “Statistics” to open up a drop down menu. Here, you will want to check the boxes for mean, median, mode, std. deviation, and skewness. A table on the right hand side of the screen should pop up and give you everything that you checked. Use what you see in this table to answer the questions on the JASP exercise 1 assignment.
