Issues Facing Students

Bullying

Bullied students tend to have low academic achievement, and they act differently.

They have a great dislike of school and are less confident in their abilities(Midgett &Doumas, 2019).

Bullying makes the students affected feel helpless and leads to them having withdrawals and a failure to thrive as they think they have been let down by the people supposed to protect them, like their teachers or parents.

Poverty

Poverty impacts the students' academic achievement, and it affects their behavior.

It lowers the student's self-esteem, which leads to the student acting out in the school setting (Olszewski et al.,2017).

Students affected by poverty have a high chance of lacking access to services and opportunities like education, and most of them leave school without graduating.

It also leads to low academic achievement as students from low-income families have lower cognitive and academic performance and have behavior issues.

Family Factors

A student facing personal family issues like divorce, violence, or a single-parent home, the student often brings those problems to school and thinks about how to get through the day, and this can worsen, and it can lead them to have a decreased desire to learn

Children from single-parent families might perform poorly in their education as they lack enough supervision (Ortiz et al., 2021).

Divorce and violence in families might lead to students dropping out of school or not graduating as they felt alone and abandoned compared to those whose parents are still married

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Students who are suffering from ADHD rush through their work, not reading carefully and not double-checking it.

They tend to be introverted and are often quiet and may be seen as defiant as they don't want to participate with other students (Arnold et al., 2015).

They are hyperactive and usually a distraction to other students

Students with ADHD might perform poorly in exams as they tend to be loners.

They can have impaired cognitive development characterized by having trouble remembering, concentrating, learning new things, and making decisions that affect them.

Language Barrier

Students having this issue are unable to communicate with their classmates and teachers.

Their behavior can deteriorate because they feel alone and defeated.

They get frustrated and begin to shut down as they build a wall and develop a fixed mindset that they cannot be helped (Flint et al .,2018).

It can lead to emotional stress and affects the student's ability to learn as they do not understand.

It hinders their progress further if the parents or guardians do not understand the language used in school and they cannot help the student.
