• Case Analysis (GEB5878) - Identification of a problem or problem ( using tools such as 5 forces, General Environment, Financial, and Resource Base View) - Alternatives - Recommendations & Implementation Plan

There are two very different types of papers. The Industry Analysis that is covered in GEB5930 and the case analysis which is covered in GEB5878. In the industry analysis (GEB5930) you are providing the reader with an in-depth understanding of an industry and the key competitors within that industry. The paper is meant to be used as a resource for students that may be analyzing a case within that industry. Consequently, one needs to provide information on the industry and on each individual company. Information that is commonly included are financial information on each company along with a detailed review of the financials. Also included is information on the General Environment, Industry environment (5 forces) and competencies required to compete in that industry Resource Based View (VRIO). In the case analysis (GEB5878), the student goes into a more in-depth analysis of the company using tools such as Value Chain, Five Forces, General Environment analysis, Resource Based View and a comprehensive review of the financials. The student then identifies the problem and comes up with recommendations and an implementation plan. The next slides will provide information on how to write the introduction and conclusion of the various papers.

The introduction provides the reader with a method for which the writer will use to discuss the case. Briefly introduce the industry and the companies within that industry (emphasis on briefly). Let the reader know the tools you utilized to identify the problem and/or situation and any conclusions or recommendations you may have. Remember, this section is to encourage the reader to read the full report, so it is short! The introduction should be the very last section that is written. http://smallbusiness.chron.com/write-executive-summary-industry-analysis- 11324.html

Conclusion

• The introduction and conclusion are interrelated

• Used to bridge ideas and analysis of the case

• Synthesizes your thoughts and analysis

• Go beyond the case analysis – consider broader

issues • Source: Writing Center UNC Chapel Hill

The introduction provides a framework to entice the reader to want more information, the conclusion is a logical synthesis of the information discovered in the case. Use the data to substantiate findings and help draw a link between the problem or analysis. The conclusion is a short document, often no more than a paragraph of 6 or 7 lines. Highlight the significant findings and how they relate to the main point of your research. You can go beyond thoughts and ideas that are contained in the case document, providing the reader with a desire for more information concerning what you have discovered in the case. Quotations and new material should never be introduced in the conclusion.
