Research essay guidelines

A.  Apply theoretical frameworks from the course to research, identify, and analyse the cultural context of IHRM for one of the following multinational companies*:

1. Disney

2. Google

3. Facebook

4. Amazon

5. Apple

6. PepsiCo

* If you wish to  write your essay on a company not in the list above, please meet your teaching staff to discuss possible options. 

B.  After you have chosen the company, you will need to discuss the following:

        a. briefly examine its activities in internationalisation

        b. analyse the broad cultural context under which it operates, and then

        c. choose one host country where the company operates (outside the home country) and critically compare and analyse the cultural           

          aspects/dimensions of IHRM of operating in that host country vis-à-vis the home country. You are encouraged to consider a host country with an 

         emerging economy, however, that is not essential.

 

C.  Your research essay must contain in-text citations and a reference list in APA format (7thedition)

D.  This is a research essay, so you are expected to use credible academic sources.

E.   The word limit for the essay is 800 words, with +/- 10% margin (excluding references). Marks will be deducted if you are outside the word count.

F.   Please indicate your name, ID number, and the ‘number of words’ on the cover page.

G.  Use a research essay style (not a business report or academic report).

H.  Submit your essay to Canvas. The Turnitin report will be scrutinized by the markers. Plagiarism and academic dishonesty will be penalized.

I.    Students are strongly encouraged to seek assistance from the Business Communications Team (BCT) prior to the submission date of this essay.

A very concise description of the target company and its activities in internationalisation; evidence of in-depth analysis and reflection on cultural issues related to the company and its IHRM context; clear identification and critical analysis of the cultural aspect of IHRM in the host country vis-a-vis the home country; exhibited excellent ability to be insightful as well as logical and systematic in essay.

Good Work (“B” range)

A concise description of the target company and its activities in internationalisation; evidence of good analysis and reflection on cultural issues related to the company and its IHRM context; identification and critical analysis of the cultural aspect of IHRM in the host country vis-a-vis the home country; exhibited good ability to be insightful as well as logical and systematic in essay.

Needs Improvement (“C” range)

Some description of the target company and its activities in internationalisation; shows only adequate analysis and reflection on the company and its IHRM issues related to culture; adequate identification and critical analysis of the cultural aspect of IHRM in the host country vis-a-vis the home country; did not exhibit enough insight or logic in essay.

Unacceptable (“D” range)

Company and its activities are not clearly identified; no evidence of analysis or logic in essay.

Excellent (“A” range)

Ideas and their presentation show a high degree of creativity and originality; essay is well-organised, precise, engaging, with an easy flow and varied sentence structure; essay contains no noticeable spelling or grammatical errors.

Good Work (“B” range)

Ideas and their presentation show a good degree of creativity and originality; essay is reasonably organised, engaging, and the flow and language structure are acceptable; essay contains very few noticeable spelling or grammatical errors.

Needs Improvement (“C” range)

Adequate amount of originality and creativity; essay presentation needs a better flow and language structure; essay contains noticeable spelling or grammatical errors.

Unacceptable (“D” range)

No evidence of originality or creativity; essay structure, flow and language are inadequate; essay contains many noticeable spelling or grammatical errors.
