Healthcare Providers Interviews
Directions for the Assignment:
Schedule a meeting with two different health care professionals. You need about 15 minutes
to ask them some questions about the health care system (see below). After the interviews
write a summary that includes answers to the points listed below. Students may work in pairs
or independently.
Each student must submit their own written work even if interviews were done with a
classmate. A typical paper will be two or three pages long. You must complete TWO
interviews and write a paper that addresses the questions listed below.
What is the person’s healthcare license, role or position?
Describe a typical day at work.
What is the person’s education? For example, A.S. in nursing, M.B.A. in
Health Informatics
Pick a topic we have discussed in class and ask about the person’s
opinion on the topic. For example, what thoughts do you have about
improving access to health care for the uninsured?
Compare the two interviews. What are the similarities or differences in
education, daily activities, and opinions?
Summarize your thoughts about the interviews. What did you learn?
Brief Example for Provider Interview paper:
“B.D. is a registered nurse (RN) who works in a hospital emergency room. Every day is very
busy. [give some examples] ... ... B.D. has a bachelor’s degree in nursing and has been a
nurse for 12 years. ... ... Many patients who come to the emergency room do not have any
health insurance and wait until they are very sick before seeking treatment for an illness. B.D.
thinks that a universal health care system would help people get care sooner and keep them
from using the emergency room inappropriately.
“S.G. is a medical records clerk and has an associate’s degree in health information
management. ... ... [describe daily activities] ... [include person’s opinion on topic] ...
“B.D. and S.G. work at the same hospital. B.D. takes care of sick and injured patients and
has a four-year college degree. S.G. has a two-year college degree and only sees patients
when she passes them in the hallway. S.G. says she faints at the sight of blood. Both people
thought universal health care was a good idea.
“After talking to these two healthcare workers, I learned ... “
