Interview Questions for Windshield Survey

Identify their current role.

School Nurse

Junior high and high school. Ages from 12-18 years old.

Services given: vision and hearing screening, scoliosis screens, hygiene teaching, puberty education, and takes care of 4 diabetic kids.

Are there any specific issues in the community? (examples: increased crime rate, drug use, bullying)

Drug use, especially vapes

Low income community (title I school)

Homelessness

Does this issue affect the entire community or certain populations within the community?

This only affects a certain population within the community.

What do you perceive as the cause of the issue?

She perceives the issue being caused by unemployment and young families.

Do you feel there is a solution to this issue? If so, what would you propose?

She talked about how the community is already combatting this issue of poverty by having a can food drive a the homecoming football game. Instead of having a ticket prices to get into the game they are asking each person to donate a canned good to the food pantry. They do currently have a food pantry in place in town for people to use when they need. Churches are involved in taking care of the food pantry. The high school also has a closet for the kids to get food and essential items at.

There is currently no homeless shelter in Clyde.

She suggested giving education on the effects of vaping.

How could we encourage the community to help with this issue?

She suggested to encourage donations to the local food pantry called “Loving Care”.

He talked about spill over crime from Abilene, nothing out of the ordinary. He basically said that every town has crime and Clyde is no different. He highlighted the growing issue of vaping especially in the middle school and high school kids.

Does this issue affect the entire community or certain populations within the community?

Just a certain population in the community.

What do you perceive as the cause of the issue?

He talks about the cause being curiosity and ignorance about the negative health effects.

Do you feel there is a solution to this issue? If so, what would you propose?

He said he thought a solution would be the community to come together and back up law enforcement on these issues.

He also things education is key when it comes to the younger generations. He talked about how they are the future and we need to pay attention to them.

They recently had an hour-long seminar with the junior high and high school about the effects of vaping. The junior high kids were more receptive than the high school students. Not enough time has elapsed from the seminar to see if it had a positive effect on decreasing vaping use.

How could we encourage the community to help with this issue?

He suggested further health education.
